Should we have a "DU Books" Forum?
I'd like to talk about books--all kinds, political, fiction, etc.--with intelligent folks (that is, yourselves) online. And DU seems ideal for that.

Anyone agree?

1. I agree.
I was going to send a suggestion to skinner about just this thing.

2. It was tried awhile back, . . .
better than a year ago, but didn't get much beyond the first two or so books. Can't say why, other than offer my personal observation that the discussions seemed disjointed and lacked thematic direction. They were held in the Meeting Room, so the discussions didn't fall off the board too quickly, but perhaps it would work better with a more focused direction. Just my .02. . .

3. Would it be possible to create a subdirectory per titile?
That way the confusion factor would be lowered.

4. It'd help if there was a devoted forum
It would require some software work. So that there's one thread per book / author / theme.

There's a lot of potential, and I'd be open to a book-club type exploration of a book, but it'd be work for Skinner, etc. to put up.

But if it worked, it would be I think one of the best things on the web.

7. Count me in
Just one caveat, it MUST include a wide variety of non-political books. Not that I don't read those but I read mainly for escapism, the story is the thing. Take me out of this miserable reality for a little while, that's my idea of a good book.

8. Instead of asking for a new forum to be developed
Edited on Mon Feb-02-04 03:18 AM by Rowdyboy
why not simply start with a new book discussion in the Meeting Room (its the only forum that moves slowly enough for the idea to work)? We've already done "Breakfast of Champions", "The Grapes of Wrath", "The Handmaid's Tale" and "Confederacy of Dunces". Start off by suggesting a book and see if there's any interest in reading it...
