Jazzbos: Whacha think of Miles Davis' "Pangea" and "Agharta"?
I've revisited this music from 75 (all recorded on the same day) numerous times and it still flips me out. In a good way.

No accounting for taste, of course, but I find this music truly monumental. Especially Pangea. It's like Hendrix, primeval tribal funk, pure improvisation and, er, Miles, all rolled in to one. And they are all clearly listening to each other closely in order to pull it off.

I'm not that schooled in jazz, much less MD's entire career. I've gotten into party chats w/ hardcore jazz fans more than once who are fairly dismissive of these records. Of course, I don't need anyone's approval to freak to music I want, but it's been nearly a decade since I've had these chats. I thought I'd see where DU jazz/MD fans (WritingIMY????) if you personally liked it, what the general consensus is on this period, etc.

And of course, tell me if there's anything else like this out there, Miles or otherwise.

Thanks.

2. It saddens me to say it, but I'm not hip to those sides.
(There. I just used my quota of corny "jazz" slang for the day. :D)

So really, it's not my opinion you want. Starbucks Anarchist has every Miles recording, I think; his opinion is the one you want.

3. Hey...
Thanks for responding anyhow. I almost linked to amazon samples, but each song is truly a side, so 30 seconds is pointless.

At any rate, in case you didn't know, I've just discovered that these were the last recordings he made prior to 6 year hiatus. I guess some folks think he's phoning it in because he was hurting from accident, broken legs, etc.

Put 'em on your xmas list so we can chat 'em up.

5. now you have my juices flowing!

Bill Watrous..."Bone-ified" (great guy...sponsored him to come to my remote little town to give a wonderful concert and he spent entire day teaching high school jazz band for nothing)

Johnnie Johnson and the Kentucky Headhunters.."That'll Work", "Pickin' on Nashville"

anything by Billy Taylor Trio

Shirley Horn...."you won't forget me", "here's to life"

Oscar Peterson Trio...anything...same goes for Billie Holiday.

6. By using "Pangea", it means he believes in evolution and old earth, and thus he hates families
and hates America and Jesus and God and traditional values.

And so I can only condemn Miles Davis as a flaming liberal homo-agenda-buying shitbag who wants our children to be raped by gay men while doing crack and burning fetuses wrapped in the flag.
