Michael Crichton's book, Disclosure is a good read.

3. Yes. But it deals with the issues of office politics in
a very interesting and thought-provoking way. The movie version isn't bad, either.

5. I don't know of a really good book
about office politics in general, but I used to work for a university, and "academic politics" are the worst -- even worse than corporate politics, in my experience. I felt like I was working in the Kremlin with a bunch of white-collar Iagos and Machiavellis. It was all about the politics, and the actual work came a distant second. So -- my sympathies. If the boss is the problem, then this might help:
