Three Man Bands -- Post 'em Here!!
Any combination of instruments and Any Genre!!

I'll start with:
Jimmy Thackeray and The Drivers

Singer, songwriter, and guitar virtuoso Jimmy Thackery has carved an enviable niche for himself in the world of electric blues. Known for his gritty, blue-collar approach and marathon live shows, Thackery was for many years part of the Nighthawks, one of the hardest-working blues bar bands in North America; since the late '80s, he's been touring and recording under his own name, and has found widespread acceptance on the festival circuit. His hard-edged, tough-as-nails approach to guitar playing and his trio's driving rhythm section holds appeal for fans of both the straight-ahead blues of Muddy Waters and the roots rock of Bruce Springsteen and Joe Grushecky. Like the Nighthawks and Grushecky's Houserockers, much of the material Thackery performs can safely be called blues or blues-rock. Hardcore blues like "It's My Own Fault" and popular blues-rock chestnuts like "Red House" from Jimi Hendrix are fair game for Thackery & His Drivers, who include Mark Bumgarner on bass and Mark Stutso on drums and vocals.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwYIztlxm5M">Chevelle - not only was it a three-man band, but three brothers. However, last year they kicked out the bassist, their own brother, for some unknown reason. He must've been fuckin' shit up. Or maybe he was developing a drug habit or something. I still love 'em though.

I'd never heard of them until I did a google search for "three woman band" just now. That said, I really like what I'm hearing so far. I'd pay to go see them if they were a local, and I think I'm going to download a few of their offerings. Good sound, solid musicianship, good writing...

35. Well.....
Not to sound uppity or anything, but I have a master's degree in music, so I look forward to broadening my musical horizons at every opportunity that is presented to me. But yes, your post helped me to find some new music that I'd not have found otherwise, so I'm grateful for that. Some of the best music I've heard is by people who never "made it big", and I always appreciate a new find of one sort or another.

52. Cannons's Jug Stompers
One of the best of the Jug Bands of the 20's/30's.

The Grateful Dead covered three of their songs: "Big Railroad Blues", "Minglewood Blues", and "Viola Lee Blues".

The Rooftop Singers had a hit with one of their songs: "Walk Right In"

Walk right in, sit right down
Daddy, let your mind roll on
Walk right in, sit right down
Daddy, let your mind roll on
Everybody's talkin' 'bout a new way of walkin'
Do you want to lose your mind?
Walk right in, sit right down
Daddy, let your mind roll on

Walk right in, sit right down
Baby, let your hair hang down
Walk right in, sit right down
Baby, let your hair hang down
Everybody's talkin' 'bout a new way of walkin'
Do you want to lose your mind?
Walk right in, sit right down
Baby, let your hair hang down

Walk right in, sit right down
Daddy, let your mind roll on
Walk right in, sit right down
Daddy, let your mind roll on
Everybody's talkin' 'bout a new way of walkin'
Do you want to lose your mind?
Walk right in, sit right down
Daddy, let your mind roll on
Daddy, let your mind roll on

78. fIREHOSE
I have a Jimmy Thackery show poster in my garage from a show at the original Jack's Sugar Shack in Fairfax. They later moved it to Hollywood. One of those great nights.

I first saw him in Houston when he did series of shows with John Mooney and the Bluesiana Band. That was amazing.

www.allmusic.com

Site gives both albums 4 1/2 stars out of five:

"Now Is The Time For Hearst and Flowers" - 1967
"Of Horses, Kids, and Forgotten Women" - 1968

Biography by Steve Huey

Hearts and Flowers were one of the most eclectic groups on the Southern California folk-rock scene in the '60s, skewing more to the folk side of the equation and often adding flourishes of psychedelia and, most importantly, bluegrass and country music. The group was founded by guitarist Larry Murray, a Georgia native who had come to California in the late '50s and played with a bluegrass group called the Scottsville Squirrel Barkers. At various points, the Barkers' membership included Chris Hillman and Bernie Leadon, and they recorded a rare album for Crown in 1962 before breaking up. Murray went on to play in several other bands, including another one with Hillman called the Green Grass Group, before forming Hearts and Flowers with vocalist/guitarist Dave Dawson and vocalist Rick Cunha, who had worked together as a folk duo in Hawaii. The trio played the Los Angeles club scene, sometimes by themselves, sometimes with a rhythm section, and eventually landed a deal with Capitol. Their debut album, Now Is the Time for Hearts and Flowers, was released in 1967 and echoed work by the Byrds, the Stone Poneys, and the Dillards. Its eclectic originals and wide-ranging taste in covers meant that it didn't sell very well, however, and at Capitol's urging, the group underwent an overhaul, adding Terry Paul and Dan Woody to flesh out their live sound, though both left before the group completed its second album. So too did Cunha, who was replaced on guitar by Leadon. The group's sophomore effort, Of Horses, Kids and Forgotten Women, was released in 1968 and featured more elements of pop and psychedelia than their debut, in spite of the fact that the band had taken to playing folk-rock arrangements of country tunes almost exclusively at their live shows. Of Horses didn't sell either, and the group disbanded not long afterward. Murray and Cunha both went on to release solo country-rock albums.

Was watching you tube videos of them just last night and Nikki Sullivan was on second guitar on a lot of em. Amazing rare footage on some of those too...Also interviews with the real Donna and Peggy Sue, and with Tommy Allsup at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake Iowa. Blows me away to think of the incredible music that came out of Norman Petty's 7th street studio in Clovis, NM.

130. Hi bmbmd
are you in Lubbock? Only been there once, on my way to Austin. But if I ever get through there again wouldn't miss the Buddy Holly Museum for anything. Still want to get to Clovis during their summer festival where I hear they still open the Petty studio for tours just those 3 days. Would like to make a pilgrimage to the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake too... Speaking of Petty, I'd always heard it was Vi Petty(Norman's wife) on celeste, but she was in Clovis, not Lubbock I thought, so I got that wrong apparently. Pretty cool though that you know this lady. I know a few musicians from Lubbock, not sure any of em are still there; some are in Austin, and a friend originally from Slaton is still on the road. ( Is there some sort of walk of fame there? I heard a story that Bobby, my friend from Slaton, missed his ceremony for his star or whatever because he was hung over and slept through it.) I can throw some names at you if you are in Lubbock , on this thread or PM if that's better; wouldn't be surprised if you know or know of some of em... RAVE ON...
