I spent the last five minutes whipping raccoons. I'll bet you didn't.

For some reason, two of them were digging into the bottle-recycling bin on the back deck. (Maybe they like sour milk?)

When I hollered and yelled at them, they, just kinda stood there and said "screw you, buddy" in Raccoonish.

So, I figured that the repeated application of the buckle end of a six-foot dog leash at full whirl might convince them of my sincerity.

It did.

(PS: Before anyone whines about "those poor animals," allow me to say one word to you: Rabies. Believe me, it's epidemic around here, and you do NOT want wild animals to get too friendly with the parts of your property where your kids go. And trust me, that dog-leash buckle didn't hurt them any worse than a finger-flick would hurt you.)

1. Hostile Raccoons? Good for you. Now after you go to bed,
they'll be back cause they are nocturnal and just wanted to dig in your trash.
My daughter had a raccoon family living in her attic in Mississippi. One fell
through the ceiling right on top of her head. She screamed, the coon screamed
and ran off.

:)

2. The 'coons and I have had several conversations on this topic. I think they
just needed a reminder that the amount of effort they put into getting to the empty milk jugs was not going to be worth the nutrition / snack value they got out of those jugs. Especially not when factoring in the fact that they were annoying me.

6. No, not soft peaks. Stiff peaks, to which all whipping should aspire.
Shouldn't it?

9. I've talked to them over and over. I've told them: "Dudes. You wanna eat
the garbage, fine with me, have at it. But just clean up after yourselves, OK?"

But I guess that's too much to ask.

7. I chase them out of here every night.
I usually just clap loudly and they leave. They go after a birdseed bowl and fresh water for the birds. They seem to get a kick out of knocking things over. The last known case of rabies around here was about 50 yrs ago.

Hi Redstone!

11. Hey, yourself! We have BIG problems with rabies here. Let me do a search for my post
about the rabid skunk in our yard...here it is:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=105&topic_id=3825470&mesg_id=3825470

It wouldn't have been so funny if the little booger had bitten anyone.

14. Does your county or newspaper publish the rabies incidents?
Edited on Tue Nov-13-07 12:58 AM by barb162
There are skunks here too and I have seen them stamp their feet around raccoons. But they back off because of the size of the raccoons. I think there are a lot of animals here because of the number of trees and shrubs. The raccoons have fights every night in the big oak tree; that's their bag. An animal control officer told me this county hasn't seen a rabies case in several decades. I'd steer clear of a skunk in the daytime too.

10. A lot of leather, so I figured the whipping wouldn't be cruelty....
and in fact, might have kind of made their evening.

Uh, sorry, where were we?

No heat from me, your PS is pretty good.

I can feel that someone wouldn't want them around his/her home, and with good reason.

I read "whipping raccoons" as something else. Carry on.

*snicker*

16. Our cabin was invaded by racoons once.
When we chased them out one took a pound of bacon off the picnic table as he was leaving. They sure can be cute, but damn, what a pain in the ass they can be.
