4. I can't wait for the first on-stage CPU malfunction,
when HAL decides that his own version of tuning and intonation is the way to go.

5. Well, the tuning gears are called "machines"
and consoles are even more cool when computer controlled.

13. Someone sent it to me asking why there weren't any robot violas...
But of course if there were, the viola section would spend the entire rehearsal programming the presets so they'd never have to put their fingers on the strings.

7. While I love the idea of changing into open tunings on the fly,
I want a minimal amount of gadgetry on(and in) my guitars. Plus I still like to do some things for myself. Get offa my lawn you robots!

11. I don't like using machines to tune my violin...
I want to be able to tune he fifths extra tight or a little looser, depending on what kind of ensemble I'm playing in.

And I'll bet it costs a fortune to fix!

9. I read about that earlier this week....
Has there been an announcement of the MSRP? With the Gibson name on it, I'm guessing somewhere in excess of $5000. $10,000 wouldn't shock me.

14. I wouldn't be surprised by 10G either...
Just because it's the latest gimmick. Best to wait a few of years, I think. That way they can iron out the inevitable bugs.

17. A friend of mine bought one of those first-generation auto-tuners...
where you plugged it into your guitar, attached a socket to the tuning gear, selected the note, and plucked- and (supposedly) it went right to tune. In practice, however..... That thing didn't work for shit.

As for intonation, as I understand it takes one hell of a sensitive and accurate tuner to adjust intonation properly in a workshop setting. I'll be impressed if the on-board electronics can handle it on stage. But then again, maybe that isn't the intention...

Gibson is apparently counting on these things becoming instant collector's items- no word if they'll ever go into full production. Perhaps some of the technology will trickle down but I don't really see how this thing, en total, would be mass-marketed. Will it replace a professional musicians guitar tech? Very doubtful. Will it be embraced by amateurs and hobbyists? Again, doubtful. I put it in the "curiosity" category, for people who have everything.

16. Sure, NOW they come out with one after I've been playing for more than 20 years....
This could've saved me a lot of agony back in the day. And I hoenstly don't know if it would help or hurt your ear, sure you don't have to put all the effort into tuning, but you'd never "get used" to the sound of an out of tune guitar either.

Plus, that is a pretty sweet "gee whiz" factor!

20. Sometimes it doesn't seem right if the tuning isn't a little "off"
By off, I mean slightly wider or narrower than a machine would call "perfect".

22. Y'know something, I agree.
And oddly enuogh with me it seems to vary between guitars. I haven't used a tuner for years, but I do remember running into that "why the hell does it sound out of tune?" phenomenon.

Of course, I shudder to think what my next re-strining adventure on my one tremolo bar equipped electric guitar is going to be like.

21. Still, I can see cases where this could come in handy...
Like when you're in the middle of a tune, and a string slips...
Instead of trying to hear the pitch as you're playing, just pull out the dial, strum, and it's fixed.
