New sign at the edge of my assbucket town: 'Welcome to Reagan Country'
Thanks to local Republicans, drivers entering Hollister on Highway 25 are now greeted by the smiling face of Ronald Reagan.

The sign that's 4 feet high and 7 1/2 feet wide sits on the property of Richard Hershey, owner of the Body Shop, who erected it with the help of county Republican Chairman Marvin Jones and an anonymous donor. The sign declares, "Welcome to Reagan Country," and is credited to the San Benito County Republican Party.

<snip>

Reagan deserves to be ranked as one of the greatest American presidents, perhaps the greatest, for "winning the Cold War without firing a shot" and "restoring some pride in our country," Jones said. Hershey added that Reagan deserves particular credit for being a man of strong moral convictions.

"He wasn't listening to Congress or the Senate - he was listening to God," Hershey said.

1. There is a special place in hell for people like Ronald Reagan
:grr:

All that military built up on the backs of people like my family trying to survive after my father passed away with Reagan cutting the already shitty benefits our family got through my dad's social security.

And I'm one of the lucky ones to make it through

2. ...because all those other Presidents had nothing to do with "winning" the Cold War
Neither, for that matter, did the USSR's genius decision to create a half democratic, half dictatorial regime that satisfied nobody. Nope, it was all Reagan...

However, I think "assbucket" is one of my new favorite words. ;)

Edited to add: Not that I'm suggesting anything here, but, uh...

9. The story says they covered the sign with plastic
to prevent graffiti.

I'm hoping one or more of the many gun owners here will do the right thing.

20. The fact that they're anticipating graffiti
ought to be a sign (no pun intended). But I'm with you on the gun owners thing - that was actually my first thought, but then I remembered that picture. :hi:

6. Well...Reagan is dead...and he is not coming back...
People who still think he is great must have caught a piece of his Alzheimers ...

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/alzheimers-disease/DS00161/DSECTION=2

Most people with Alzheimer's share certain signs and symptoms of the disease. These may include:

* Increasing and persistent forgetfulness. At its onset, Alzheimer's disease is marked by periods of forgetfulness, especially of recent events or simple directions. But what begins as mild forgetfulness persists and worsens. People with Alzheimer's may repeat things and forget conversations or appointments. They routinely misplace things, often putting them in illogical locations. They frequently forget names, and eventually, they may forget the names of family members and everyday objects.
* Difficulties with abstract thinking. People with Alzheimer's may initially have trouble balancing their checkbook, a problem that progresses to trouble recognizing and dealing with numbers.
* Difficulty finding the right word. It may be a challenge for those with Alzheimer's to find the right words to express thoughts or even follow conversations. Eventually, reading and writing also are affected.
* Disorientation. People with Alzheimer's often lose their sense of time and dates, and may find themselves lost in familiar surroundings.
* Loss of judgment. Solving everyday problems, such as knowing what to do if food on the stove is burning, becomes increasingly difficult, eventually impossible. Alzheimer's is characterized by greater difficulty in doing things that require planning, decision making and judgment.
* Difficulty performing familiar tasks. Once-routine tasks that require sequential steps, such as cooking, become a struggle as the disease progresses. Eventually, people with advanced Alzheimer's may forget how to do even the most basic things.

7. Where's Hollister?
I live in Reagan country, not far from his Presidential library in Simi Valley. There's also Reagan country in Illinois.

When I moved out here I swore not to live in any town bisected by the Ronald Reagan Freeway, and I have been as good as my word.

Where I'm moving, near Santa Cruz, the likes of this would never happen.

I can hardly wait.

I know there was an attempt to rename Agoura as Reagan, California, but it never seems to have gone anywhere.

18. Ignorance of that magnitude makes me sick to my stomach.
"strong moral convictions" - yeah, on the side of the immoral.

Jackasses.

Reagan did not win the cold war, he just happened to be sitting in the white house when Russia fell apart of its own design, which had more to do with its internal policies and failures as a governmental system than anything that the US ever did.

Restoring some pride in our country? I can give him some credit for that, but it was false pride. An unbiblical pride that was (and remains) sinful. There's a big difference between a good pride of "We're great!" to a triumphalistic evil pride of "We're the greatest!" which, under Reagan, became "We're the greatest so we can do whatever the hell what we want anywhere, any time!"

Reagan is a great big stain of shame and hurt on this country's history.

19. Sign that used to be off of I-95 in Titusville, Florida:
Edited on Thu Nov-15-07 07:49 AM by PeterU
"Thank the Lord for George & Jeb Bush". I used to wretch everytime I drove past it. Had I lived in the Titusville area, I really think I would have taken up paintballing just to aim target at that stupid thing. Thankfully, it is now down. (A sign of the times, perhaps?)

One of the first things the Florida legislature did when it turned to Republican control in the 1990s was rename the Florida Turnpike for Ronald Reagan. Because, you know, Ronald Reagan was such an important figure in Florida history, you know....:eyes:

You know, sometimes I think to call some of these conservative folks fascists is a stretch. But on the other hand, I see some of these monuments to these non-heroic "heroes" of theirs and I'd think they'd be the first to put up posters of Mao, Hitler, Stalin, Amin, Hussein, etc. had they lived in those countries instead of this one. Suckers for the cult of personality.

On edit: Here's a link to the Bush sign I mentioned before:

28. Barf. The guy must be rich, because what did Reagan do for the
middle class & poor? Mofo.

On my commute I see a sign about as big, w/ the stars & stripes and a silhouette of an eagle and rifles, that says "FREEDOM ISN'T FREE" -- and at the bottom a banner is tacked: "Paid for by So and So Neocon, a legal Polish immigrant."

Well, good for him. :eyes:

My grandmother's mind was pretty well gone by the time Reagan died. When we cleaned out her house we found pictures of him everywhere, besides the ones she had framed in practically every room in the house.

I'm thinking that right underneath this Reagan sign (or just beyond it down the road) you can have your own sign....
