2. Well, now that we've seen how truly incompetent and evil a president can be, you're right.
Nixon was a fucking saint.

Though, to speak seriously, Nixon was a fantastically intelligent person AND he did some good: ending Viet Nam, EPA, getting into China (though we might end up rueing that some day), and whatnot.

He was paranoid and an ass and got involved in some criminal activity, but I don't think there was ever a time that he didn't love this country and never sold it out for his own benefit, like Reagan and Bush and especially Dubya.

This is not to imply I'm looking at Nixon through rose colored glasses, but he gets a lot more bad rap than he deserves. Or, let's say it this way - the bad rap he gets is justified; but he does deserve more good rap.

9. Nixon was a douche; it's just that Bush is an exponentially greater douche.
So in retrospect Nixon looks better than he really was, and what he was, was a douche. I do agree he did some positive things, like the EPA and going to China, but he didn't end Vietnam -- he escalated it; the war was still raging on when he resigned. On the political spectrum in most respects he wasn't much to the right of some DINOs like Lieberman, but he was also an authoritarian, racist, anti-semitic, paranoid, crooked assbag who, incidentally, gave authoritarian assbags Rumsfeld and Cheney their start in authoritarian assbag politics. Speaking as one who watched every damn minute of the Watergate hearings, the unprecedented suckage of the Bush administration in no way excuses the douchebaggery of Nixon.

10. He could trust no one

But downstairs he was building a house of deception. He could trust no one because in his isolation he thought other people were like him. He governed by secret orders and false records, memorizing scripts for public appearances and even for one-on-one meetings with his own staff and cabinet. His principal assistants, Haldeman and Henry Kissinger, spied on him as he spied on them, while cabinet members, generals, and admirals spied on all of them -- rifling briefcases and desks, tapping each other's phones in a house where no one knew what was true anymore.
