i am SOOOOOOOOOO stupid!
so my nephew's gf's car ('83 Celica) blew the head gasket, and they brought it over here to see if i could help fix it.
i start taking it apart and find that the timing chain tensioner is broken too,so it needs a LOT more parts + labor than the car is worth.
i tell them so.
i also tell them my friend has an old Maxima that he needs to get rid of,so i bring it over, and it doesn't pass smog.
it didn't miss by much,it'll probably pass with a fresh set of plugs and a new air filter.,but i'm gonna be the one to make it work.
next time this sort of thing happens,do me a favor, please remind me to just mind my own damn business. :-(

2. What's a head gasket?

I didn't do well in shop class. My mother sent me my iron-smithing project to prove it. I guess it was a candle-holder, but it looks more like a mideival torture device.

So at least I get to use it.

5. The engine has two main structural parts.
The lower part is the block which containsthe hollow cylinders for the pistons. On top of that is the valve head which contains-yup-the values that control the intake and release of gasses from the cylinders. The two are sealed together with bolts and a metalic head gasket. The gasket itself is not expensive, but it is a lot of work to get to it. Plus it is easy to screw it up because the bolts that hold the valve head on need to be installed at a specific tension using a torque wrench.
