My First Season Tickets: Southern Maryland Blue Crabs!
Edited on Thu Nov-15-07 10:29 AM by bertha katzenengel
(Actually, I only have a 25-game plan.)

My seat selection is today!

The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, partly owned by Brooks Robinson, is a new team in the Atlantic League. The stadium they're building is maybe a mile from my house. We can walk or ride our bikes to games. No messing with parking!

We're talkin' baseball...

1. Pretty good level of play
I saw several Atlantic League games when the Nashua Pride were in the league (they downshifted to the Can-Am League, along with Atlantic City, last season). It's a solid level of play, although the pitching can be a bit of an adventure at times.

One of the cool things about indy ball is that you'll also have a chance to see some familiar faces trying to make a comeback. Nashua signed Rich Garces, aka "El Guapo", a former Red Sox reliever and a cult hero in New England. Don't be surprised to see some odd duck from the Orioles or Nats show up on the roster.

3. I got to see the Bridgeport Bluefish several years ago, before we
moved down here. That is actually some exciting ball!

BTW, Tommy John is their coach. The same guy as the surgery is named for!

7. I was always amazed at the comeback he made and pitched well
into his 40's. I think this is his second year there.

5. Do you put Old Bay seasoning on them when you boil them?

8. Ha! I don't eat crabs, but yeah, around here they're boiled in it.
I can just see the signs the fans at other ballparks will wave: "Boil the Crabs!" "Crack the Crabs!" etc. People get creative.

12. 6 1/2 years. We'll be here for about another 8. When Mrs. V. retires,
we're moving to Southern California. We were going to move to Arizona, until she experienced a couple of Februarys in So. Cal., and she decided the weather was mild enough there, too. :)

6. You're a Waldorf folk, Bertha?
Very cool. Born and bred across the Patuxent in Calvert County and lived there my first 18 years of my life.

I wish Southern Maryland had minor league baseball when I was growing up. For minor league ball, my friends and I would drive to Richmond or Bowie.

10. Yep. I'm a temporary So. California transplant, but I really love it here.

We go to see the Baysox regularly, and w/ the Blue Crabs, we'll probably make that trek less often.

11. It's nice
Waldorf gets a bit sprawlly, but get out into the more rural areas and it's quite nice.

Have you gotten a chance to explore Calvert County yet? You might like Solomons.

13. Have been to Solomon's Island several times, but i know that i
must be missing a lot. I love to drive down in St. Mary's & Calvert.

And Waldorf sprawl. It's literally all around me. The stadium just down the street; houses and a new school down the street in the other direction... sigh. :(
