4. My kid's dad does that, but it has to do with spending most of his days nose-down in GW manuals.
It's pretty common amongst Warhammer/40K/Necromunda/Mordheim etc players for that reason. As long as they aren't spelling things Orky, I'm cool.

17. I did that for a while in elementary school, not knowing any better.
I was reading a lot of books by british authors at the time, most namely Roald Dahl.

That reminds me, I need to find a copy of Danny, Champion of the World. That was a great book.

20. 'posers' is too kind
'wankers' gets closer to it, but 'sad, pathetic, horrible individuals who wish to cover up their sad, pathetic, horrible lives with ostentatious pretense' is closer still.

24. You're right--that's it exactly
Wouldn't have fit in the Poll entry as nicely, but it sums up my opinion quite well.

22. Right. Well, to be honest, it is easier to plough throught the morass of British
spelling differences at the centre of our language difficulties than it is to be forever queuing to the loo and whatnot. I say! I shall have to learn new ways of proceeding linguistically with a stiff upper and all that, what?

Edited on Thu Nov-15-07 04:40 PM by AnneD
I had exposure to lots of English literature, I read the Guardian daily, so it stuck as it were. I grew up in a heavily Cajun French area. It was years before I found out that the correct spelling of our dog's name Phideaux was Fido.

We're not pretentious-just lazy.

Edited to add that I might need to hot foot it to Canada so at least I'll blend in.;)

27. Well you have no sense of humour
I like it better that way. Also spent a lot of time in the UK-and it looks more natural on some words to me. I used to be a great at spelling-then I took Spanish for many years. I actually told my kid that animals was spelled animales-then I realized it wasn't in English. Spelling is a dolor in the arse all right-kids are having spelling tests now-English is stoopid language though still better than French.

Spanish is so phonetic-it's hard to go back to English after it. Next up-I'm learning Portuguese-which is just like Spanish but everything is prounounced totally differnt. It's like hippie Spanish or something. Or it's South American French. Something like that. But I think it's actually the most romantic sounding language there is.

28. Well you know its not just Brits who spell that way..
I seem to have found myself in the company of Aussie's a lot of late..one of whom was a former boss whom was always complaining about OUR poor spelling skills..its easy to get into the habit of spelling that way when the flood of e-mails you have to respond to have that spelling in it...
Besides my good friend born in Guyana (former British colony) whom is now an American Citizen will kick your butt if you call her a poser....:P
