Has anyone here read Jeff Smith's "Shazam; Monster Society of Evil"?
Edited on Thu Nov-15-07 12:44 PM by Lorien
Hi All,

An old friend of mine who is a comic book creator just mentioned to me that his last project, "Shazam; Monster Society of Evil" is being Freeped on Amazon. It's surprising that it has only two reviews so far, and that both of them are negative. The graphic novel debuted to RAVE reviews as you can see here: http://www.boneville.com/shazamreviews . Yes, the storyline is indeed a parable for what has been happening under the Bush regime, but there isn't any mention of real world political figures anywhere in the series. I honestly don't believe that Jeff has ever been heavy handed in promoting his personal political ideologies in this series or in "Bone", his original best seller. So, if you've read his work and enjoyed it could you please give him a little review on Amazon? http://www.amazon.com/Shazam-Monster-Society-Jeff-Smith/dp/1401214665/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1195142762&sr=8-1

Thanks everyone!

:hi:

On edit: even if you haven't, could you give this thread a kick? Just about everything I've ever posted in the Lounge drops like a stone!

1. You know Jeff Smith?
Bone was fantastic, I was sorry to see it end. I'll have to pick up Shazam next time I'm in the comic shop.

Any idea if an animated TV/movie of Bone will be produced?

2. For about 21 years
I was his first hire at a little animation studio he co-owned in Columbus, Ohio called "Character Builders". I went on to work for Disney but we've remained good friends ever since.

As for the second question; irons are in the fire, but that's about all I can tell you right now. ;-)

4. Wow! You know him?
My eight-year-old son and I really enjoyed Monster Society of Evil.

He just got a Bone collection from his Scholastic Book Club order yesterday. He's already 2/3 way through it.

5. Yeah, he's one of my
"bestest friends" (as he likes to say). We don't live in the same town anymore so I don't get to see him and his wife as often as I'd like, but we do our best to keep in touch. They do a LOT of overseas and domestic travel; it's an enviable lifestyle.

I'm so glad that you and your son have enjoyed both series! He still has three more "Bone" books to put out through Scholastic, though all three have been printed in earlier (non-color) editions through his own imprint, Cartoon Books. Your son might really enjoy his blog and website, too: www.boneville.com .

6. I will definitely turn him onto the site.
My son asked me very seriously if Bone were "realistic fiction." :-)

I particularly love the coloring in Monster Society of Evil, so rich and original.

Tell Jeff he's got a couple of fans out here :hi:

7. Thanks Ellen!
His colorist Steve Hamaker has done most of his color work on both Bone and Shazam. Steve is an excellent artist in his own right. You can see some of his work in the most recent edition of a graphic novel called "Flight.

"Realistic fiction". Love it! I'll have to pass that one along. :-)
