PINE LAWN- Telvin McKinney stopped into the Crown Food Mart after school Tuesday to buy some chips or cookies. The clerk noticed his plaid boxers peeking out of his low-riding pants, just as a police car was parking outside the store. "You better pull them pants up," she warned Telvin, 16.
Telvin quickly yanked up the waistband and tightened his belt. "Oh, I forgot where I was there for a second," he said.
Word was spreading quickly around town that the city's Board of Aldermen passed an ordinance Monday night outlawing what's popularly known as sagging.
Now, anyone who wears pants below the waist that expose the skivvies or skin is subject to a $100 fine. That includes girls whose low-rise jeans sit too low. Parents face up to a $500 fine or 90 days in jail if they knowingly allow their children to wear their pants in such a manner.
