I told one of my students that Jesus loves him.
He was giving me shit for taking up his cell phone. The class was laughing at him. I'm not sure what came over me. But it got him to sit down and get back to work.

After the whole class finished laughing at him.

Quote of the day. "Ha. He said Jesus love you. That's messed up."

Sometimes it's worthwhile violating some kid's First Amendment rights.

1. Kids don't have first amendment rights, really,
so you took nothing from him but the phone. That said, there could be repercussions if you said this in a public school. Even if it was not the intent, you used the language of proselytizers. All it would take is one kid from the class reporting the event to one humorless, god-uppity parent, and you could be in trouble.

I would have told him Allah will reward him with multitudinous virgins if he would just sit down and shut up.

2. That's not the sort of thing you can say to teenage boys if you want them to get to work.
We live in a society in which too many people go looking around for something to get upset about. But I have good rapport with my kids. They know at any given moment I'm probably fucking with their heads and they seem to respect that. Most teachers you hear about getting in trouble for little things are teachers with lots of other problems in the classroom.
