I made split pea soup for the first time!
it's pretty good!

I didn't have a hambone to put in, but I added a bunch of salt pork (damn, that stuff is hard to cut!).

I just had a bowl - pretty tasty! now I've got a big container in the fridge and four in the freezer!

Now that I've done it, tell me how YOU make split pea soup!

1. I have 2 methods
I open the can and heat it up.

I go over to my parents house when my father makes it.

:hi:

2. A hambone is best but a hock is even better than
salt pork, less fatty and better taste. Falls apart like ham will and you don't need to do any cutting. (Cheaper, too)

Also, add a leek, chopped. Good stuff.

3. Yeah
next time I'll try it with a hock or a hambone. The leek idea is good!

Do you bother to puree it all? It pretty much smooshes up all by itself, but still has a little texture.

7. No, it'll fall apart by itself.
And what you'll have tomorrow will be the consistency of heavy clay. :) But it'll taste even better than it did today.

4. hambone usually,
but when I don't have one I use smoked ham hocks. I use split yellow peas instead of green (I think that's a very canadian thing to do...)

5. I used to LOVE split pea soup
:9 My mom used to make it quite a lot, although I don't remember how she did it.

(And then I saw The Exorcist when I was twelve, and I'm pretty sure I haven't eaten split pea soup since.) :scared:

6. I don't know if I've even tasted split pea soup.
If I have I forgot...

Why's it called split pea soup? Do you split the peas first?

9. Yes
it's very labor intensive, unless you have an electric pea-splitter.

11. Because they originally come
from Split, Dalmatia in modern day Croatia.

12. Do you have a recipe???
My mother (before she stopped cooking years and years ago) made wonderful split pea soup. But the recipe was in her head and I was pretty young when she stopped making it.

I love split pea soup.

13. No, sorry
I just sorta faked it.

Soaked one bag of green peas and half a bag of yellow peas overnight.

Drained 'em, added 14 cups of water or so, diced half an onion (it's all I had - coulda used more) and chopped some celery and threw it in. Cut up a chunk of salt pork and added that, too.

Added some salt, pepper, dried basil. Simmered the whole thing for about two hours.
