So who is the best guitarist ever?
Conversation with a coworker..

he claimed he had friends that could play as well as Chet Atkins, Eddie Van Halen, Mark Knopfler ...

I just kept reeling off names.

Obviously, my coworker is just plain silly (I'm being charitable here).

But it prompts the question. Who is the best guitar player ever?

3. tough call. Maybe Paco DeLucia or John McLaughlin
or Leo Kottke, Michael Hedges, Knopfler, Atkins, or Hendrix.

There are so many, and it's hard to really compare styles. And I agree: someone may be able to adequately ape Atkins or Knopfler, but that doesn't mean they can play as well (or write as well).

Chuck Berry
John Lennon
Johnny Ramone
Steve Jones (as much as I'd hate to admit it)

65. Jones helped Iggy Pop crank out one of his best albums of all time

I challenge anyone to get the guitar riffs from "Cold Metal" or "Tuff Baby" out of their head once they've heard them.

He also took a blowtorch to Waylon Jennings' classic "Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way" on one of the oddest "supergroup" albums of all time, Chequered Past (guitars: Steve Jones & Tony Sales, vocals: Michael Des Barres, plus Nigel Harrison and Clem Burke of Blondie on bass and drums).

78. My Problem With Jones
Is that he was such a rocker-boy poseur. Saw a solo show in the 1980s and was ready to scream (in a bad way) at all the hair-flipping.

I'm not usually a fan of that kind of stuff but JT could get away with it IMO. He's doing it in this clip from '73:

5. There are far too many factors to weigh...
I mean what makes a great guitar player? Someone who can play very fast, complicated stuff? Someone who can play with extreme feeling and emotion even if what they are playing isn't technically speaking difficult? Someone who plays in a completely unique style? Someone who can sound good using no effects? Someone who can create an audio color palate using a lot of effects?

I'm not sure I can think of someone who encompasses all of this and dependingon the time and mood and song and whatever, there are hundreds if not thousands of guitarist who could be "the best" on any given day.

6. There is no "Best".....
There are a lot of really technical cats out there but have no soul. And there are lots of soulful cats out there that are not very technical. It is what floats your boat.

My favorite ever is Jerry Garcia. the most soulful guitar player i ahve veer seen, wht he didn't play was a important as what he did play. I also loved Frank Zappa. Jimi. the blues cats.

Right now, i would say Warren Haynes from Gov't Mule, Derek Trucks,Trey Anastasio (Phish), and a great young player, Sean Lehe (Izabella). I also love a acoustic players like Billy Nershi (String Cheese Incident) Scott Law,Bill Frizell....

13. Well said
Well said.

I think the guy who best combines technique and heart is Mark Knopfler. He's a brilliant musician, but he's an even greater songwriter.

There are also guys who may not have had the best chops in the world but who were innovative, who perfected a distinctive sound. Tom Verlaine and The Edge come to mind.

22. I think it's important to point out the difference between types and styles ....
...of playing.

Most Jazz and Classical players are better than Rock players but then style and interpretation come into play (excuse the pun).

I mean, I love certain styles played by certain players.....but trying to compare the 2 0r 3 is an exercise in futility.

In short...it's like trying to compare Jim Hall with Jim Hendricks....Depends on what style they are playing.

There are so many variables and genres and styles to consider. Choosing the best usually equates to choosing the most popular. There are probably many great classical virtuosos who could outplay anyone today but were unknown because recording technology didn't exist then or they were simply unknown and undiscovered.

So with that said my tops are Joe Satriani, Jimi Henrdrix, David Gilmour, and Steve Howe

Impossible to pick and choose amongst so many stellar musicians!

While I certainly agree with others upthread who have mentioned SRV, Jerry, and the Reinhardt brothers; I have to give a shout out for Don Ross. Ross is the first and only person to twice win the U.S. National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship (1988 and 1996). I've seen Ross a couple times at music festivals, and he's simply amazing to watch/listen to. He uses the entire acoustic guitar as an instrument - not just the strings and fretboard. Check out this video:

51. Depends on what kind of music you're into
There are so many different players across a pretty broad range of genres that it's hard to choose. I like Jim Thomas of The Mermen, Dave Wronski of Slacktone, Scotty Anderson, and Deke Dickerson, but a lot of people have probably never heard of them. The late Danny Gatton is sadly underknown, too, imo.

The one genre I can't stand? Jam bands. Whoever decided that 17-minute guitar solos were anything but self-indulgent wankery should be dragged into the woods and beaten within an inch of his life.

64. I'm going to go with Henry Sloan. No recording of him was ever made.
No photograph of him exists.

He taught Charlie Patton how to play the guitar. Charlie Patton taught Son House. Son House taught Robert Johnson.

Rock Guitar, as it is, wouldn't exist without the contribution of the Delta Blues guitar players.

For reference, Son House playing the Delta Blues:

80. Another vote for Hendrix
Interesting that I haven't seen Clapton's name mentioned in this thread. I think he would get a few votes.

One of the most underrated guitarist would have to be Jeff Beck, IMO.

Maybe there should be thread about the most overrated and underrated guitarists.
