I'm considering canceling my cable tv .. the price goes up and the service goes
down. Has anyone canceled theirs, and how was the transition from a TV addict?
I figure I'll read more.

1. I don't know that I could do it, although I have friends who
have no cable service and they get along just fine. Most of them subscribe to Netflix, etc., and use the internet for news.

2. I'm considering it
I've seen just about every thing I want to see on cable. :P

Plus the last few years, I've grown a fondness for growing my own movie DVD collection. So I might, might at some point ditch the Satellite and just rely on my DVDs and the local news and PBS.

But I haven't don't that yet though.

3. i'll never go back to paying for TV again
i asked myself "how much of this am i acutally watching?"

the answer was surprisingly little. MrsCoffee liked the Food Network and HGTV, and i would occassionally turn to the sports channels, but other than that, we watched very little other programming (we had something like 80+ channels to choose from, and couldn't name more than a dozen that we could recall watching an entire program on).

Cutting the cable was a great decision. it seemed like it would be a massive shock, but i don't even think about it anymore.

4. Gave up TV cold turkey, twice. It took cigarettes and crochet to do it for good.
Quitting television took cigarettes. Quitting the cigarettes took Wellbutrin.

Good luck with the TV issues. There is life outside the box. Welcome home.

5. if you have broadband, just download what you want to watch
that way you're not surfing channels looking for something. you get what you want when it's available, and that's that.

it's working really well for me, no tv now for 17 months. (aside from watching football down the road at the bar)

6. Thanks, do you get regular and cable shows on broadband? I'll miss Keith
Olbermann.

7. i haven't looked
but what I'm talking about it 'torrents' - google it if needed, but essentially shows show up on lists a few hours after airing, then you download the entire thing before watching

8. I did
but I still have the hook up for the computer. I'm using magnificent rabbit-ears. We have 5 local stations, a couple of Spanish stations, 2 or 3 god-awful religious POS-waste of time, 2 shopping network-type and a 24 hr, news. There is some real crap on. Lucky for me, I read a lot, and wander around on DU for entertainment. I say take the plunge and unhook it won't kill ya. I've thought about a cheaper alternative to cable for the computer, like dial-up or satellite, but they haven't shut me off for a late bill in a while. I'm just waiting.

9. We did
it's a waste of money.

We use rabbit ears. we get ABC perfect, but the rest are pretty bad because of the local topography. If pressed I can finagle a signal from all of them though, but other than ABC they're not great.

We don't watch TV anywhere near as much as we used to. We download only our most favorite shows from the internet, and then hook our laptop up to the TV to watch them once a week or so.

If you're a TV Addict find something else to do with your time. Go to the library and get out a few books. Get a hobby. Try and spend more time with friends and family. The only real time you'll miss your television is when you're sitting on your couch with nothing to do. So don't do that and you'll be fine.

And those lazy saturday mornings when you don't want to do anything? Throw in a movie.
