Testament to buying one of those new-fangled front loading washers and dryers.
I used to have my circa 1986 top-loading washer and contemporaneous dryer until it sprung a leak and drizzled all over my laundry room floor.

Nov. 2006 water usage: 10,950 gallons
Nov. 2007 water usage: 4,200 gallons

This is controlled for the sprinkler system (drained and off at this time of year) and for Mr. Writer's astronomically long showers. :P

And yes, we're doing the same amount of laundry. :)

1. Ooh, I've been thinking about getting one of those
Aside from the water savings, how satisfied would you say you are with it? Do you do a lot of laundry? And what brand do you have? (If you don't mind my nosiness!) :)

7. mine are Kenmore. I got the economy ones, smaller, will fit under
a countertop if you need them to but I like the pedestals. I don't need a lot of bells and whistles on my appliances, these suit me just fine.

later on I got the companion dryer.

9. Ah, I thought you meant one of those combo deals
where the washing and drying happens in one machine. :)

But this one looks pretty good if I decide to go for two separate machines. I'd probably do just the washer for a while, too.

11. I had the washer for maybe 2 years before I bought the dryer.
the pair I had before were GE and they sucked. top load washer, normal dryer. Hated them after a very short amount of time and was not even annoyed when my husband assassinated the washing machine with a sleeping bag. I tolerated the dryer longer because it still worked. It never dried clothes as well as my old Kenmore and can't even compare with the new one.

10. We have a set of Maytag Epics - the 9700 version.
They're full-sized and work extremely well!

2. My showers never last more than 5 minutes.
Which is weird considering I'm currently single...

3. i have a neptune maytag stacked pair.
i love em. no idea about the water bill. but they wash laundry nearly constantly around here. i had an earlier version that nearly shook the house down when it spun, and dance around the floor. this one is no louder than an average dishwasher. they are about 10 years old.

the only problem is
you have to take the clothes out asap so they don't wrinkle....
shirts, pants, etc....

6. I LOVE MY FRONT LOADING WASHER!
clothes are nearly dry when they come out, so less time in dryer
clothes last longer
far less water usage
much much quieter
less strain on my back (I bought the pedestals, to reduce bending and stooping)

8. We have had a reduction, but with only 2 of us, not as dramatic...
plus we got the smallest of the whirlpools. We love it.
