So I popped another fucking tumor in my brain, bramaged as much as it is.
This one was a complete surprise. Caused my pituitary to hemorrhage it was so big. 3.3 CM. Got my 3 year MRI in 2003, clear no problems. First one came out without leaving any residue in 2000. This time it took out the eyesight in my right eye when it hemorrhaged. Could be the optic nerve is comprimised, Have to do Gamma Knife to shrink the bit that's left, have to do nasty steroids because the old boy is pretty punked right how. They need 1 MM clearance on my left optic nerve or radiation is out and I have to choose on having my skull capped to get the rest.

Growth hormones, testosterone, prednisone, I'm going to look like Paul Tuttle Sr. when I'm cleared to work out again muscle mass is already coming back and I haven't lifted a weight.

But this was not fun or anything to joke about. The morning I was taken out of ICU and put into recovery, the gentleman across from me (they put us 3 to a room with one brain nurse) peacefully passed away about 2 hours after I got there.

They tried for an hour to revive him, but he was gone. Had an aggressive tumor removed but it was his time to smile at his nurse and go.

I did not sleep until 3 days after I was discharged.

Even after everything, in another couple of years, it may return. This time, I'll be more careful and not ignore the signs, like the Bell's Palsy I had last December my doctor said was nothing, everybody gets it.

That was the tumor becoming large enough to interfere with my day to day routine and my Doctor didn't think it was serious.

He was wrong again. Just like he was wrong in 1998 when he said I had arthritis and not the first tumor.

It's time to change Doctors.

They shaved my face when they operated, so I don't look like my pictures anymore. Short hair and the handlebars are gone.

But I am vertical. Heart attack August 1, I fell down my stairs and cracked some ribs end of August, and now this. My threesome is done.

I'm glad to be back. Oh, and I had a real attitude change and got to be good friends with God after ignoring him for the last 40+ years. Even for those who do not believe, it gave me something to latch onto while I faced my devils during recuperation.

And your ears will hear a word behind you, this is the way, walk in it',whenever you turn to the right or the left.
Isaiah 30:29.

My mom had glioblastoma, so the very idea of brain tumors scares me to death.

I'm sending vibes. Hope you recover quickly.

6. I cried like a baby when my doctor told me
They saw the hemorrhages in the MRI and had me go straight away to University Hospital in Newark NJ for emergency surgery. It was no waiting at that point, even though they couldn't take it out for 2 days because they had NO room on the schedule.

9. That's how it was with my mom.
She helped me move here, but was having dizziness and memory problems. She went home to see her doc, promising she'd come back to help me unpack. But they did a cat scan and then an MRI and put her right in the hospital.

What kind of tumors are yours?

15. non-malignant adenomas within the pituitary gland
which disturb the function. Rare in men, even rarer when they return as mine has.

But I'm glad they're non-malignant. Hope they don't return again.

20. I have a 50/50 chance when I'm all done this time it will return in 5 years.
I'll take the shot. If only my vision would return to my right eye I would be happy again. The eye works just fine, like it should, but I see black.

And some mighty cool hallucinations every once in a while as the pituitary tries to get back to normal.

I guess being a tough guy meant something, but I'm flat worn out and tired of being sick. I can't get my carpal tunnel fixed till next Summer now and can't go under anesthesia unless it's an emergency for 6 months, not even the dentist.

The anesthesiologists chipped a molar and nicked my vocal cord during the operation. I sound like Little Nicky.

As a twenty year cancer survivor (I had Hodgkins Lymphoma in 1987) I can tell you that an ass kicking attitude is mighty helpful.

I have been looking forward to this day. Waiting for my good eye to regain focus, waiting for my memory to et back to where it belongs. Waiting for my anger at my circumstance to calm down.

There but by the Grace of God go I. I more than ever believe that. The other people in my room(s) were on death's door, they never told me if I was, and I stayed awake for 8 straight days because I was afraid to go to sleep.

Thank you. I just want my right eye to come back and be friends with my left eye again.

So much to deal with in such a short time. Sending big time healing vibes...

I live in fear of developing another brain tumor; I had one removed 17 years ago. Benign, an acoustic neuroma. But it took the hearing nerve and inner ear on one side so, even though the odds are slim to none, I'm still afraid of one developing on the good side.

I know what you must be feeling. Hang in there; here's to many brighter tomorrows.

58. Thanks, my wish is for my eyesight to return to my right eye
and for my left eye to stay lit up. Doing everything now with just one eye is difficult, and driving is a whole new experience. I literally had to relearn how I drive and my friends call me bobble head because you have to sweep side to side with your head to see everything and still drive straight and not pull to either side.

I even drove the hour each way to my Mom's house for Thanksgiving. She didn't expect I could do it. I was exhausted by the time I got home. Super stressful with as much traffic as there was on Rt. 80.

No matter how menial the job or difficult the boss, the number one priority for me will always be health insurance. My heart attack alone the 1st hospital billed Oxford Health care over $60,000.

I have YET to receive a bill from the hospital that did my latest brain surgery. And that is scary.

My mom had a golfball sized tumor removed about 5 years ago from the middle of her brain - so I can somewhat understand what you're going through. Sorry you had to deal with it AGAIN.

I wanted to get my mom a t-shirt with this on it - but while she thought it was hilarious, she'd never wear it. ;)

57. Love from across the country -- Oregon to New Jersey -- tonight and tomorrow.
My wife Radio Lady and I send good wishes for your recovery. We're dealing with medical issues, too, but nothing like you've experienced. She had no idea you were battling such difficulties. I like to say, "Keep a good thought in your head." Black humor for you, because your thoughts have to do battles with your tumors! :sarcasm:

Wish we were closer to you geographically -- we're kind of a fun couple and helpful, too.

I used to live in Randolph Township, New Jersey -- not sure where you are without a map.

That was with my first wife, who died in 1971.

Radio Lady and I have been together for almost 35 years. One of the toughest was 1995, when I climbed a ladder to trim some branches off a tree, and fell... Bone came through my elbow, I broke my wrist, lost 1/2 my blood and crawled into the house to call 911. They airflighted me to a trauma center and operated for 11 hours. Luckily, I survived with a usable left arm (I am right handed).

You sound like a really great guy.

We don't really believe in the power of personal prayer, but we will do some kind of devotional tonight.

61. Yourself and Radio Lady are two of my favorite people on DU
THANK you from my heart. Randolph Township is a few minutes up Route 10 from here. And how much the area has changed. Over development, shopping, shopping, shopping. I actually did a rolling tumble. tucking in my hands and face and tried to protect them and roll as I fell but I fell from the top step and landed on my back at the bottom of the stairs. I never fell so heard and didn't realize till later in the day I was hurt bad enough to have to go to the hospital.

The people where I work have been more supportive and concerned than I could have ever imagined. And through it all, their primary concern was getting me back, since (heheheheh) NO ONE there knows how the systems run except me. And I control the website, their email, the backups. And yet, there was no talk of "having someone else available just in case something happens". It was get the hell back here as soon as you can.

I only wish they paid me a little more LOLOL.

Take care and all my best to the both of you.

Dain

80. What a nice thing to say about us! Well, we try harder...
I'm glad you're employed and have medical coverage.

Yeah, I guess we all wished we were paid a bit more. Now we volunteer for free -- thankfully, we don't have to be employed right now.

When I lived in New Jersey, I worked for a company called Adage. They manufactured A to D/D to A converters and the Ambilog 200 -- a combination of an analog and digital computer. I also worked for them in Washington, D.C. and Boston.

In those years, the speed of digital computers was such that you could do computations faster in analog. The forte of that system was in being able to compute with analog and then store on digital. The system could rotate three-dimensional models in real time -- good for molecular modeling. They were doing that kind of stuff at New York University and Columbia University. I sold one of those systems to the National Security Agency, a big ticket item at half a million dollars. I also tried to sell Hoffman La Roche, but never got the order.

So much for my illustrious career. Now, our career is living -- healthy, not so wealthy, and at least a little bit wiser!

Nice to chat with you. Hope everything improves from now on.

Best,

Al

60. holy shit man!
glad you're back!

I can only relate with the bell's. I had it when I was 18. I recovered 99.9%, the only "droop" I've got is my right eye, which is so slight only I notice. :hi:

63. Mine is my left eye and my right closes when I eat
Man it sucked. My whole left side of my face went to hell in a hand basket and I had a bad speech impediment for 4 months and couldn't blink my left eye till May.

64. it's some scary shit, huh?
did you think you had a stroke when it happened? That's what I thought (I was 18 remember, lol)My senior year in high school too. I was first chair flute too, so trying to play out of one side of my face rather sucked. How has your recovery gone since May? I know lots of people don't recover at all.

66. I called in sick and sat alone the first day scared to death it was a stroke
I called my ex and she drove me to the doctor the next day. It happened on December 22 of last year, JUST as I was getting ready for Xmas I woke up and thought I was going to die.

In retrospect, for me it was a warning I didn't heed and wished I had.

69. You bet thank you
I was mad at myself for not picking up on the signs. But I was also in denial that it would return again. Next time I'll listen to the voice behind me, because inevitably, it will return someday down the road.

70. Welcome back!
I'm sorry you had such a clueless doctor. And I'm very glad you're still here despite that.

I hope you don't get any more nasty surprises. You've had enough of them.

73. The problem is finding another doctor who is taking new patients
who have a history like me. I've already talked to a couple and they just say sorry and hang up the phone. It's not that they don't understand they are afraid of the liability now. My doctor sits on the board as Chairman at the local hospital and is well respected (by dolts I think) as a "good" doctor. I beg to differ with them, but I am in between a rock and hard place. And I go visit him yet again today in the afternoon to go over everything and to fight with him about releasing my records to my heart guy and endocrinologist.

anyone going through it. It ain't pretty going through this alone.

78. Thank you. They call me Ticker at work now
joking about what the fuck I'm doing vertical.

But that's what being a real tough guy is all about. Don't have to beat on people, just have to say NO and keep pushing on.
