what is the best present you've ever given anyone?
it can be one you were particularly proud of, one that garnered the best reaction or just one that was amazingly awesome

my top 3:
i gave my best friend the clap for valentine's day (vd for vd)

i gave my roommate ebola for his birthday...he said that's what he always wanted for his birthday

but in all seriousness, i think the best one was a blanket i made for my mom for christmas a few years back. it was just one of those fleece tie blankets with some nice fabric squares in the center of the top, but i made it for her and she loved it.

what about you, loungers?

1. That's a good question. You'd have to ask everyone that I've given a gift to. Prolly the ones from
a love place were the best.

That, and the box of Vermiscious Knids I shook over that birthday cake that one time.

7. Donuts.
Doesn't sound like much, but there aren't many places to get vegan donuts, and I don't think there are any in the southeast, so the past two years I've overnighted some to flvegan for his birthday.

10. i gave my mother a puppy.
Edited on Mon Nov-26-07 09:41 PM by mopinko
her dog dropped dead out of nowhere on christmas eve. i bought the only puppy i could find on christmas morning. he was too tiny to leave his mom, so i had a poleroid of the 2 of us to give her. cute little cocker spaniel.
my sisters nearly killed me. they thought she was too old to have another dog. she was in her early 70's. i kept the dog for a few months until he was house broken. i took him back when she had to move to assisted living. she was sure we were just telling her that, and that we had put him down.
he ate the last bite of every meal she had for the next 15 years.

21. a hanging planter
I gave my ex shortly after we'd started dating. it was an arty little thing i'd seen him admire when we were downtown.

he was so thrilled, because it was the only present he'd gotten from anyone that year - even his family didnt send anything.

I smashed it when I found out he was cheating on me.

24. Well, I don't think this one was my best, but it was a sign that I really knew what my brother liked
I knew he likes to cook, and he's a beer afficianado. So I found these big beer bottle shaped containers full of the ingredients to make beer bread. I figured with his supply of different, interesting beers he could make a few different kinds. So I bought a couple of bottles, wrapped them up with no attempt to disguise their shape.

A few days after I bought them he finally got around to giving everyone his wish list, and sure enough right next to each other on the list was 'beer stuff' and 'cooking stuff'. :)

Just to top it all off, I hung a bottle opener around the neck of one of them, outside the wrapping paper in plain sight. :) Right up until the end he though I'd bought him a couple of beers.

34. a western union money-gram with enough cash to cover the diff of a used car
since the current one owned by the owner had shit the bed, so to speak, and being carless was out of the question. it wasn't a special day or anything, but the 'that day' service made it appreciated.

I wish I had that kind of cash these days, dammit.

47. A recording and translation of an old Czech jingle for my mom

This one takes a little explanation.

When my mom was a little girl, her dad used to sing a little Czech song to her (he was a Czech immigrant). Mom never learned Czech, so the words were always nonsense to her, but because it was a song that her dad had sung to her, she kept the sounds of the song in her head.

In 2003, I took my parents to the Czech Republic so mom could see the place her father had come from.

On almost the last day we were there, we were watching some traditional dancers and the song she knew was being used. She said that was the song her father had always sung to her.

When we got back to the States, I contacted one of the tour guides from the Czech Republic to help me track down a recording of that song. It took a while, but eventually he was able to send me an MP3 of the song, which I put into iTunes and burned to a CD.

Then came the second part. I had asked the guide to give me a rough translation of the song which I took to a Czech language teacher who put a little polish on it. I then took the final translation and edited it for meter and rhyme.

I printed a greeting card on my home computer with both the Czech language version of the song and the English translation. I enclosed the CD that I had burned, and I sent it to my mom.

She was very happy to have not only a recording of the song her dad had sung to her, but to be able to see the words and the meaning he was sharing with her.

The song?

It was a short little song about a bright-eyed little girl playing by the side of a stream, with the reminder in the song to play safely and not fall into the water. Looking back, I can imagine my grandfather singing this song to his little girl and pledging to keep her safe from harm.

Yeah, I think that's the best one.

48. My college roomate...
Is a HUGH!!1!11! Beatles fan. I got her two gifts that were absolutely fabulous.

The first the Revolver album...mint-condition, still-in-the-cellophane.

The second was actually for her baby shower. Her favorite song is Imagine, and randomly, she collects elephants. While out shopping for a baby gift, I discovered the John Lennon line of baby stuff (this was when it was brand new), and among the items was a plush elephant that played Imagine. The roomie had no idea about the Lennon line and was completely floored by the gift.
