Ambiguity in film. Successes? Failures?
To me a big success would be Bresson's Au Hasard Balthasar. A big failure would be, uh, Lost in Translation.

2. I thought Lost in Translation was great.

Successes: Last Year at Marienbad, Caché

Any failures I've seen have been pushed to the back of my mind and will remain there until further notice.

5. Cache is really cool

Haneke did an interesting disaster/post-apocalyptic movie as well, but I forget the name.

edit: Le Temps du Loup is it--not as good as Cache in my view, but still quite interesting.

3. The ending of 2001 was pretty ambiguous
And imo, that's a great film.

4. Hit: Mulholland Drive
Miss: Lost Highway

Liked both, but sometimes ambiguity misses the mark.

6. Success: The Birds. Failure: The Birds
I remember when I was a kid HATING that ending. Even now, it grates, but I have an appreciation for why it ends that way.

7. Speaking of that - the Mist (SPOILER ALERT!)
I would have liked it to have ended like the book - the surviving main characters get into the truck and drive off into an uncertain future. The movie ending was very intense, but it just kind of grated on me. Even thought the main character did everything right as he saw it, he still got screwed.
The more ambiguous ending would have been better, for me.
