I Just Rescued A Cat From 2 Coyotes
at work. The coyotes were in the parking lot and this little black cat that has been hanging around work for about a month was hiding under my car. We've been feeding it but today was the first day it ever let me touch it.

I grabbed it from under the car and through it in the back seat while the coyotes circled. Stopped at the store on the way home and bought $200 worth of cat supplies. Now I just have to keep it from my 2 cat hating pooches.

This should be fun.

2. Me Too, It's Going To Be Ruff
 I have it a bathroom, in a large dog carrier at the moment. The dogs keep trying to sniff at the door and I keep barking at them to quit it.

4. That's a tough one
I don't know how to make a dog like cats.

But...

I used to have a real cat-hater. But his doggie-day-care lady had a couple of cats, and he never ONCE went after them. He wanted to eat MY cats, but he behaved around her.

She used a squirt bottle with a vinegar solution in it. I could tell how good or bad he'd been during the day by how much he smelled like a salad when I picked him up.

She also had a super-alpha German Shepherd who kept everybody in line. In training classes, he would sit atop her van. If a dog misbehaved, he'd bark and the dog would jump back into line. It was awesome to watch.

6. Yikes, I Hope I Won't Need The Help Of An Alpha German Shepherd
as the pet budget is already getting out of hand. (The abandoned horse I adopted 2 years ago is eating her way rapidly through that.)

"I could tell how good or bad he'd been during the day by how much he smelled like a salad when I picked him up." Too funny!

I've had dogs and cats together in the past but the cats were here first at the time.

8. Yeah
my current dog came in as a puppy with the cats already here. One cat likes him just fine, one cat is wary, and one cat studiously avoids him. But all the dog wants to do is snuffle their butts.

9. At The Time, The First Dog Came In As A Puppy
and the cats took charge of him right away. He used to snuggle with them too, when they allowed it. He was the biggest dog and as the others arrived they just treated the cats the way he did as they came in.

3. Nice work!
What are you gonna name him/her?

I've seen some seriously kick ass names on here.

My favorites were:
Chairman Meow
Flea Taxi
Batman (good for a black cat )

I hope it works out with the dogs. My dog was very leery at first when we brought the kitty. Now they're best pals. They "fight", but the cat starts it every time!

5. I Was Just Looking At The Threads To See I Could Steal A Name
I guess I will wait and see what his/her personality dictates (haven't even looked to see which it is yet). Next will be a trip to the vet.

I am sure we can work it out somehow with the dogs but it is going to be a challenge. They really get hyper around cats, squirrels, birds and anything else that moves.

7. I have hope that it will work out.
My dog is a spaz. A huge pile of spaz. She spazzed out when we brought the cat home. I let the cat have a room to himself for about a week to get used to the place and establish a safe zone. Then I brought him out while I was home and put him in there while I wasn't. After a couple weeks they learned how to co-exist in relative peace. They have a ton of fun wrestling and playing.

My dog, by the way, is a pitbull. :)

10. Thanks For Sharing How You Did It
It is quite similar to what I was thinking. I hope it works out as well as yours. The dogs seemed to have settled a bit already. At least they aren't sniffing under the door any longer.

My real question is what to do with him\her tomorrow while I have to go to work. I don't trust just the door between them because one of the dogs dug a hole right through one when I locked him in a bedroom once. Maybe I will move the cat to the garage (in the pet carrier for the day).

12. Don't Know Yet
It is all black and not very large. I figured it had been manhandled enough for one night so am trying to give it some quiet time. It just very recently became friendly enough to touch and still jumps if you try to pet it. He/she is going to need lots of loving and attention.

20. That's not uncommon:
Charlie, Day One (approximately five hours after I plucked him from the middle of a bridge during rush hour). Notice unused kitty bed in background:

Charlie, One Year Later. People beds are just fine, thank you!:

21. In what part of the state?
Edited on Tue Nov-27-07 09:56 AM by Gormy Cuss
My neighbor showed me tufts of fur and other evidence of a struggle in his yard yesterday (no bloody parts, thankfully) but we both think that a cat was nabbed by one of the coyotes from our local open space area (the Diablo Valley area east of Oakland/Berkeley.)There have been coyote attacks here in years following a dry winter, which we had last year.

I hope the cat's okay.

22. Southern CA
Outside of LA. The cat is fine, the coyotes never got it. We are trying to adjust in a 2 dog (cat eating) household. The cat is actually quite brave. I let it out in a bedroom with the dogs on the other side of the door and it seems quite at home already.

Earlier, I tried introducing it to the really hyper dog while the cat was safe in a large dog carrier but that didn't go so smoothly. The dog nearly choked to death (and scratched me)since I was holding it back at the collar and the cat hissed, backed up and pooped on the glued down rug of the carrier. I cleaned up my blood and the carrier and made a mental note to come up with a new, hopefully less messy, plan for introductions.

29. Good for you. Cat meat is bad for coyotes.
Sorry, couldn't bite my toungue quick enough.

Now that you've got a feline friend, get it spayed and otherwise checked out by a vet and get it vaccinated against all the nasties cats get.
