3. Neither, sometimes.
If the book is remaindered it's still new. If the dust jacket is torn, worn, or missing then it's a bit tacky but some friends and relatives would be fine with that if the book is something to be coveted, like a good hobby book that went out of print too fast.

It's always tacky to live the big yellow discount tag on the dust jacket.

4. I got one about Hollywood. A fifty dollar book marked down to 99 cent bin.
Giver compounded by pressing the point by asking whether or not I really, really liked it in front of entire X-mas party. I knew there was no way this person spent $50 on this book. She wouldn't have spent $5 if she could get away with it. I think she wanted satisfaction that she paid $1 for something she could pass off as a $20 gift.

Otherwise, no.
