3. Yeah. Here.
Special E-Letter
Dear friends,
I am deeply disturbed by what happened during last night’s halftime show of the Super bowl. I was downstairs cleaning up the kitchen when the halftime show began and when I overheard the lyrics of the songs I went upstairs to have the kids switch the channel. Too late! When it was over I called my mother and said, Did what I think just happened, really happen??
As a family, we immediately knelt down and repented on behalf of America and pled for mercy on our country. We prayed the scripture in 2 Chronicles 7:14, If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.?
At the end of the game we had a family discussion and talked about how we could make our voice heard, that there were people in America who were not willing to stand back and watch our country go the way of cultures in the past who gave themselves over to the flesh and were destroyed.
MTV produced the halftime show but AOL was the official sponsor. We can’t boycott MTV because we don’t subscribe. But we can cancel our AOL service and we did! When I called AOL this morning to cancel they asked me why I was punishing AOL instead of CBS or the NFL.
I explained that CBS would not know if our family never watched another show on their network because we aren’t a Nielson ratings family. Same goes for the NFL. I don’t hold within my hands any influence to impact CBS, NFL or MTV. But AOL does!
If enough people cancel their AOL subscriptions, you can believe me, AOL will go directly to CBS, NFL, MTV and any other acronym involved, and their voice (and pocketbook) will be heard.
May I share a personal aspect to this story. For over a year Haven has been campaigning for Instant Messenger. I have repeatedly said no, explaining that I felt it was a time-waster. Last week the subject came up again, but she had a fresh argument. She said, Television is also a time-waster and you let me watch that after all my schoolwork is done. I responded, Good point. Are you willing to trade television privileges for IM?
When she said that she would, she gave up watching television unless the whole family was watching something together, (which is very rare.) Tucker made the same choice and three days ago Steve loaded AIM, AOL’s Instant Messenger service. (We’ve had an AOL account for over ten years!) She has had the best time since then chatting with her friends and I was happy because, as many of you know, the kids have not made friends as quickly as I thought they would since we moved.
Last night when I put Haven to bed, I told her that I felt like we should cancel our AOL subscription but I would ultimately leave the decision up to Tucker and her because they were the most who would most be impacted by the choice.
With tears running down her cheeks and onto the pillow she said, I will make the right choice, but it is so hard. I waited so long to get IM. I don’t want to, but I will do the right thing.?
I was so proud of her. (BTW, Tucker agreed, too, but he was more mad than sad.) Living in America, we don’t often have to suffer for our beliefs. I believe cancelling our AOL account is a small way that we can take a stand for Christ and do our part in turn(ing) from our wicked ways. AOL may not hear, but God will and, perhaps, He will forgive (our) sins and heal (our) land.?
Blessings,
Lisa Whelchel

P.S. Feel free to forward this E-letter to as many people as you know. Perhaps, collectively, our voices will be heard.

Post one!

My prayer for Lisa Welchel:

"Dear God - Why do you make us suffer idiots like Lisa? Honestly, Lord. People like her make my head hurt. Aren't hangovers bad enough? Do us all a favor, and increase her IQ by about 25 points or so. Thanks, Big Guy. I appreciate it.

PS - How's that Falwell-smiting request going? I still haven't heard back on that one."

Seeing a woman's boob on television triggers a family crisis?

And...Haven???

Who would name their kid Haven, anyway? :-)

5. I found out about her vacation from her website.. a Christian cruise
February 2, 2004
January 28, 2004

Oh wow, what a week! We just got back from a 4-day cruise from New Orleans to Cozumel, Mexico. What fun! I was asked to speak on the "K-Love Friends & Family Music Cruise. Talk about a line-up. Listen to just a few of the bands that performed on the cruise. FFH, 4Him, ZOEgirl, Mark Schultz, Rebecca St. James, Avalon and Natalie Grant!

Steve and I had a wonderful time just sleeping and reading and eating. The best part about the trip was enjoying it through the children. They had the time of their lives. I think they enjoyed the freedom and independence the most. You know, I grew up in a time when I could hop on my bike, tell my mom I was going to a friend's house and that I would be back by dinner, and not look over my shoulder. Well, my kids have never experienced that kind of freedom. Until now…

They basically woke up each morning, ran off to hang out with new friends they made, and met up with us for meals. They spent the day at the pool, eating pizza from the 24-hour pizza parlor, gobbling up unlimited ice cream cones, just hanging out, and of course, attending all of the concerts.

I'm a big fan of Avalon, Steve discovered the magnificence of 4Him, and the girls enjoyed ZOEgirl, but the highlight of the cruise for Tucker was meeting his favorite band, Stereo Motion. Actually, all three of the kids went to every one of their concerts - and sound checks even. The band members were so nice and, on the second night they even invited Tucker to join them at their dinner table.

The Christian comedienne, Chonda Pierce, was also performing. She is so funny, and sooo sweet. Much of her routine is about growing up as a preacher's kid. It was so weird hearing her tell the same stories I've heard Steve tell, only the names are different. She has a real heart for preacher's kids and she really reached out to my kids. They love her. BTW, if you are an adult preacher's kid, she offers a wonderful ministry at her "Funny Farm" in Nashville. For more info go to www.preacherskids.com.

Another highlight for me was meeting Jennifer from "FFH." I had certainly heard of this band but I wasn't very familiar with their music. After meeting her (and her adorable son) on the ship, I immediately went to the bookstore and bought one of her CDs. Now I'm a huge fan!

Everyday on board the ship was full of entertainment but the best day was the one in port at Cozumel. The hosts rented 90 mopeds for all of the artists and we convoyed around the island together and then we ate lunch by the beach. It was certainly a day to remember.

I really want to encourage you to log onto www.premierchristiancruises.com and ask for info on next year's cruise. I'm telling you, I've been on a few cruises in my life, (including two, three-week cruises filming "The Love Boat" specials,) and this one is by far the best. Not because the food is better, or the boat is bigger, because that isn't the case. The reason is because of the atmosphere. Nobody was at the bar or the casino and you didn't have to screen out any "blue" words.

Let me illustrate my point. On the last night of the cruise I told Tucker and Haven that they could stay out late, watch the onboard movie, and wear themselves out. (Mostly because I wanted them to sleep the whole 9-hour drive home.)

Even though I knew the boat was full of 700 Christians, I woke up in the middle of the night and when I saw that the kids weren't back, I couldn't go back to sleep. I got up, got dressed and went to check on them. I found Tucker sitting with another boy his age and he was strumming the guitar and they were talking.

When I walked up the young man said, "Hi, Mrs. Cauble. We've just been talking about eternal security. What is your opinion, do you think "once saved, always saved," or do you think you can walk away from your faith? I must have looked dumbfounded because Tucker piped in with, "Yea, and we've been debating about whether speaking in tongues is for today, and if so, when is it appropriate and when is it not." I thought to myself, "And I was worried about where Tucker was and if he was okay!" Hey, if this is the kind of "trouble" he's going to get into on a cruise, then let's sail away more often.

Then, I found Haven. When she said that she didn't go to the movie then I started to lecture her about always being where she was supposed to be, or asking for permission to change plans. Boy did I feel badly when she said, "I'm sorry, Mom. They didn't show the movie tonight because there was nobody in the theater. We all decided to have a worship service under the stars instead."

I can't think of a better vacation for a Christian family.

That's because your kids have a Bible-thumping paranoiac for a mother, and (I'm guessing) you didn't.

21. Oh, baby
>Natalie Grant<

I went to the same church as Natalie and her family for almost fifteen years.

I don't want to get sued.

Let's just say that several of those I still know who also went to that same church greeted the news of Natalie's success in the "contemporary Christian music" world with rolled eyes and less-than-charitable comments.

Its really hard to be someones friend with a serious whack job as a parent.

My best friends mom was a heroin junkie while I was in high school man do I have some weird memories from that. He always came and got me to rescue her.
