A really gross question regarding cats?
How do you express their anal glands or should I take her to the vet?

Low on funds I am.

The smell would not bother me.

Help!

7. Sure it's not worms?
That's usually suspect #1 for ass dragging, unless you have a long haired cat, then the first suspect is dingleberries.

9. Still a possibility
There's OTC wormer, but it only works on a few varieties. The stuff from the vet works much better.

You might be able to get them to prescribe a dose of wormer without an office visit.

4. Take her to the vet.
Tell the vet up front about your cash reserves. Maybe you can get away with seeing a tech and not get the office visit charge.

6. Is there a vet or vet tech college or tech school nearby?

Maybe they will have a vet/tech student do it for free, or at least really cheap. Worth a phone call, anyway. I mean, you don't want her to hate you.

10. do you really want your cat to associate YOU with the
finger that savagely went up it's butt?

no. Cats are vindictive. Your cat will just secretly hate you and possibly start using your bed for a litter box.

For the cats sake and your own, take it to the vet or a vet school.

12. My cousin worked for a veterinarian and she showed me how to express anal glands on a dog
My old dog was scooting so I included this when I gave her a bath.

As for your cat, will you have someone wearing leather gauntlets to hold her while you do this?
LOL- I had friends who needed to bathe their cat and resorted to enclosing her in a net bag used for abalone fishing!

13. Anal glands? In cats?
I've had cats for like 25 years. In all that time, I've never had their glands done. Dogs, yes. Cats, no. Honestly, I didn't even know they had glands, or that they ever needed to be expressed. But now that I know, I'm sure one of the kids will need it done.

Three days after I first heard the phrase "crf", one of my cats came down with it. I spent the next 2 1/2 years administering fluids. Guess I'd better start researching cat glands.

16. It's a problem more often associated with dogs, I believe
LeftyMom's suggestions are probably more on the mark - worms, or perhaps a little leftover poo (esp. if she's got longer fur).

Our vets let us buy single-dose worming pills, about $6 per pill, w/o a visit and once a month is adequate (usually isn't a concern as much in the winter, but I'm always on the lookout). There is a new, fantastic pill from Advantage called Advantage Multi that protects against worms, that kills fleas (pretty much the primary place cats get tapeworm - just one flea can do it, if the cat swallows the flea and the flea has the parasite), prevents heartworm, hookworm and roundworm, and controls lice and ear mites with monthly application. One dose is about $14.

And the pills, either the standard worming pill or the Advantage Multi, will not in any way harm your cat if it turns out she doesn't have worms. It is purely prophylactic. Just don't give it to her more than once a month.

I think you might want to - for your cat's comfort and your own safety :P - consider a few other options before squeezing away back there. Again, I have NEVER encountered anal gland issues in any of my cats; I have 7 and have been a cat-parent for well over 10 years. Never recall my parents mentioning it as an issue with any of our cats when I was growing up, either.

20. I suspect worms- never heard of anal gland problems with cats.
I have my guys dewormed every year when they have their yearly shots & check-up. Most likely worms if the cat has made it a habit. I have six dogs so my vet sells me the the dewormer & I administer it myself. It saves quite a bit.

21. They can have anal sac problems
Their anal glands can get impacted and need to be expressed. When Monty is suddenly scared by something he'll express anal fluid, and it is NASTY-smelling stuff. He's not plugged up - no scooting problems.

24. I was going to post about the nasty smell
The stuff from the anal glands is horrible. It's thicker than urine, and it will NEVER COME OUT of any fabric. NEVER. It doesn't smell like the usual cat urine smell, either. It's just awful.
