BIG WEDNESDAY 12/05/2007
It always seems to be on a Wednesday. Surf on west facing beaches here in southern Cali expected to be in the 15' to 20' range. I am going to Malaga Cove in Palos Verde on Wednesday afternoon and let Alison talk me out of killing myself. I suck to begin with, and the surf will be well in the lethal range for "Barneys" like me. With camera in hand I am going to be hitting all the big spots like Tanker Reef off my home beach. This is where oil tankers unload just off El Porto. On big swells the reef goes off with huge breakers (up to 30'+) that can only be surfed by "tow-ins". California Peggy, charge your camera.

4. Oh Yea!
If the cove is reasonable I will paddle out, otherwise it picture taking time. I was going to head up to Monterey Wednesday morning for a western themed show. My intention was to get there a day early and drive up to Cowells Cove in Santa Cruz. With the surf barreling like it will be I'm going to hold off till the show is over and stay an extra day, and surf it on Monday.

5. No worries
If it looks like I'd be in over my head, I'm not paddling out. I'm not so much afraid of the dying as I am of the pain if I'm not killed outright.

3. My dear puerco-bellies!
Ah, thank you for the heads-up!

Maybe I'll get down to the Manhattan Pier for some super wave pics!

I'll check the paper for high tide times...

That makes the waves extra exciting!

Be careful, you hear me?

We're not ready to see you surfboard yourself into the big Ocean in the sky, baby!

6. No worries Miss C-P
They will surely close the Pier before the swells peak. If you are just off to the side with a tele-lens I bet you will get some awesome shots!! My camera is a wimpy little 3mega pixel so I don't think I will get that good of pictures.

7. I haven't been down there when the waves were THAT big...
My lens is an effective 300 mm when fully extended...

28 to 200 for a normal film SLR...

Being digital makes it appear longer!

We'll see...

:woohoo:
