Rhymes that should be forbidden in songs
No song should ever use "shelf" as an end rhyme. The ridiculous metaphor "to put you on a shelf" only exists because lame lyrics writers don't have anything else to rhyme with "by yourself." There's got to be at least five weak rock ballads that use the shelf/self rhyme. This couplet by itself makes a song not worth listening to.

4. Diana Ross killed "Baby baby baby baby baby" as a lyric
Then that Carpenter chick turned it into a zombie and set it loose on radio again.

6. I love ABC, but, boy did they rhyme hard
All Of My Heart lyrics

Once upon a time when we were friends

I gave you my heart. The story ends.

No happy ever after, now we're friends.

Wish upon a star if that might help

The stars collide if you decide

Wish upon a star if that might help

Well I hope and I pray

That maybe someday

You'll walk in the room with my heart

Add and subtract

But as a matter of fact

Now that you've gone I still want you back

Remembering

Surrendering

Remembering that part

All of my heart

Spilling up pink silk and coffee lace

You hook me up, I rendezvous at your place

Your lipstick and your lip gloss seals my fate

Sentimental powers might help you now

But skip the hearts and flowers, skip the ivory towers

You'll be disappointed and I'll lose a friend

No I won't be told there's a crock of gold

at the end of the rainbow

Or that pleasure and pain, sunshine and rain

Might make this love grow

Well I hope and I pray

That maybe someday

You'll walk in the room with my heart

Add and subtract

But as a matter of fact

Now that you've gone I still want you back

Remembering

Surrendering

Remembering that part

All of my heart

Yes I hope and I pray

That maybe someday

You'll walk in the room with my heart

And I'll shrug and I'll say

Then maybe today

You'll come home soon

Remembering

Surrendering

Remembering that part

18. I think that's a pretty decent lyric, as a matter of fact.
It is supposed to be half tongue in cheek as well.

7. Destroy all slant rhyme.
And stop rhyming words with themselves, Black Sabbath!
("Generals gathered in their masses,
Just like witches at black masses..." - War Pigs)

11. Oh BALLS! Ain't Misbehavin'?
No one to talk with,
All by myself,
No one to walk with,
But I'm happy on the shelf
Ain't misbehavin',

15. Ella Fitzgerald did her best, but every time I hear that song....
Edited on Mon Dec-03-07 07:21 PM by Bucky
I think about how much better it could be without that forced rhyme. But the only possible revision would be

No one to talk with,
All by myself,
No one to walk with,
Not even an elf!
Ain't misbehavin',
I'm savin' my love for you

Kinda changes the whole mood.

13. *ahem* I disagree with your shelf/self rhyme
Beastie Boys, "Ch-Check It Out"

Shazam and abracadabra
In the whip I'm gonna cruise past ya
Yo money, don't chump yourself
Put that shit back on the shelf
Light rays blazin'
You're out of phase, an'
my crews amazin'
We're working on the record yo
So stay patient
