Today's GeoCRAZY Question: Where's the Ocean?
Don't bring your surfboard to either of the following two places....

In which desert is located the point farthest away from any ocean or sea on Earth?

BONUS: Which state or province contains the point farthest away from any ocean or sea in the Western Hemisphere?

3. You're the closest.
This was a hard one, so I'll just give it to you.

The Dzoosotoyn Elisen Desert in North Western China is near the Gobi, but seperated by a mountain range or two. In this desolate, sparsely inhabited area lies a geographic point that's about 1645 miles from the nearest coastline, all the way in the Arabian Sea. That's farther than the distance from San Francisco to Chicago--and not a beach in sight.

You had the right area (and country) but the wrong Dakota. The point lies in the middle of Shannon County, SD, which is also part of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. It's "only" about 1100 miles from the nearest beach in San Diego county. Let it not be said that Democrats only do well in locales with a coastline--in 2004, 85% of eligible voters in Shannon County voted for John Kerry, a nationwide record.

2. That's what my then 14 year old son asked when I told him we're moving to Kansas...
from New Jersey where he grew up.
