This could be bullshit if I have got the constitutional details wrong. Hey, I'm a foreigner. ;)

It is this: Hillary Clinton is the reason why Nancy Pelosi 'took impeachment off the table,' and is also why John Conyers has kicked it into the long grass.

If Bush and Cheney were removed then Pelosi would be President, and furthermore she would be the incumbent going into the 2008 election. That would make moot the race to be the Democratic candidate, because they would be mad not to run the incumbent. Pelosi would also be the first woman president. But she cannot be, because Hillary Clinton is supposed to be the Democratic candidate and the first woman president. Pelosi must not get in the way of Clinton's destiny!

I think it's part of the closed-door Democratic discussions about it, myself, but it doesn't get talked about it too much. And I tend to forget about it... :blush:

I think it's probably a fairly large piece of the political calculations going on in DNC HQ and among the various Dems, Dem candidates, and moderate Repubs.

Actually, now that I think of it, it is too late for Nancy Pelosi to get on the primary ballots in many states now, just like it is too late for Al Gore to be. So, if she was by sucession to take the Presidency following the impeachement of Bush and Cheney, I don't think she could run for President in 2008 anyway. She wouldn't make the primaries, and would be facing a three-way competition between the Dem nominee and the Repub nominee if she did run.

If Bush and Cheney were impeached, she would have to state publically that she was only finishing out Bush's term, leaving the Dems and the Repubs to compete for the White House in the usual fashion.

This may actually be a flaw in our system of government. It would be better if someone not in the line of succession had the responsibility for the decision of whether or not to push for impeachment.
