John Houston Fans: Under the Volcano

Just wanted to let you know I was delighted to discover on Saturday that the Criterion Collection has restored and released John Houston's film UNDER THE VOLCANO.

This is an amazing, underappreciated work that he directed close to the end of his life. It is a daring adaptation of Malcolm Cowley's novel, which many people said was unfilmable.

I just know there are some tried and true film people here and wanted to let them know; and also, to find out, out of curiosity, if anyone else thinks highly of this film.

Sorry - reflex correction! Now, to business: "Under the Volcano" is my favourite novel of all time. I ran out and bought the Criterion release (though I could hardly afford it!) because I'm a Huston fan too, and also because it contains the awesome documentary "Volcano: An Inquiry into the Life and Death of Malcolm Lowry." It's really worth the price alone. But the movie version of "Under the Volcano" is solid, if not exactly brilliant; and Albert Finney's performance is the best drunk acting ever committed to celluloid, up to and including W.C. Fields and Cary Grant.
