Rest In Peace: Karlheinz Stockhausen has died
BERLIN (Reuters) - German composer Karlheinz Stockhausen, one of the world's most influential 20th century composers and a pioneer of electronic music, has died aged 79.
German broadcaster WDR, with whom Stockhausen worked closely for more than two decades, said in a statement he had died on Wednesday after a short illness at his home near Cologne in western Germany.

Best known for experiments with electronic music in the 1960s and 70s, Stockhausen, who composed more than 300 individual works, also had a significant impact on avant-garde and classical music.

1. You're kidding me. He set the standard back in the 60s.

4. A giant.
He influenced, in varying degrees, Miles Davis, Cecil Taylor, Charles Mingus, Herbie Hancock, Yusef Lateef, Anthony Braxton, Frank Zappa, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Jefferson Airplane, The Grateful Dead, Kraftwerk, Sonic Youth, Björk, and Aphex Twin.

RIP maestro.

6. Amazingly, he managed to finish that 7 opera cycle before he died.
29 hours! I didn't realize it was done (as of 2003).

That generation of composers mostly leaves me cold, but Stockhausen had a vision and influence that transcended the ultra-rigid and formal mannerism of the rest of all of those post-Webern guys. Plus, he was amazingly creative with electronics and studio technology.
