1. I've been hearing
for years that our students graduate from high school with a 5th grade reading level. Nothing is being done about it by our government or our schools. Parents are going to have to step in and start tutoring their children at home to give them the extra attention they are not getting in their schools. Reading and science education are sorely lacking in the U.S.

2. The worst of it is that if you do tutor them at home
and get them interested in more than the pap they're being fed, they aren't allowed to use it in school. Will even be penalized for knowing more than the other kids...getting ahead of the teacher's 'lesson plan'. (That's not to blame the teacher entirely...many would love not to be restricted by the crap our government expects of them)

Yes, the alternative is to homeschool. But then what happens to a REAL education which includes interaction with other kids. What happens to the kids whose parents aren't capable (or too busy trying to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table...or are too lazy) of teaching? They wind up at the bottom of the barrel and that's just not fair to them or to the rest of society at large.

Over the years I've read Alice many, many times. When I was a kid, I saw the fun things in it; the white rabbit and the caterpillar and the fantasy. As I got older I learned puns and wordplay from it and later some about logic and puzzles. As an adult I can appreciate it in its totality. Something I'd never have done if it had been dumbed down only to appeal to the childish aspects.

I find this effort a crime.
