Is she an actress? Does she support good causes or politics? What should we know about her?

Her name is Padma Lakshmi an Indian born, Indian-American model, actress, cookbook author and television host.

During the early part of her career she was a model, then did some acting. As a model she was famous for a long scar on her arm (the result of a childhood car accident) and the industry's fetishizing of her "imperfection" (after a while they refused to allow her to use coverup makeup on the scar).

As mentioned elsewhere, she married and divorced fatwa victim author Salman Rushdie.

She wrote a cookbook about Indian food that won some serious aclaim. As a result she became something of a foodie celebrity and was hired to be the host and one of the judges of the food competition show, Top Chef.

In her first season on Top Chef, she was famous for having a glassy eyed, slack jawed delivery. Later, TC gossip on the web claimed that she was smoking truly awsome quantities of weed before, during and after taping of the show. When she left her dressing room, it was reported, it was usually with a wall of smoke following her. (Maybe that's how she managed to eat all that food she was require to sample for the show). In her subsequent seasons, she seems to have confined her puffing to after hours and her delivery is more normal.

She is involved in the UN Development Fund for women, so she can't be all bad politically.

I know she's written cook books, but she apparently hardly eats any of the food she prepares. I dunno, that seems weird to me...
