Since we're talking about teenage girl issues...
Edited on Wed Dec-12-07 06:17 PM by AspieGrrl
I'm 16 years old - well, turning 16 in less than 2 weeks. I have an older friend (she's somewhere in her 30's), who is leaving the country for about a year, starting in about a week. In a few days, she is having a very chill kind of drop-in going away/ holiday party at her house, on a monday night. It should be calm, not rowdy or dangerous at all. (I hate standard parties anyway, trust me if it was one of those I would not be going) The thing is... I would have to take the subway downtown (I live in a big city) in the evening, and walk a couple blocks to her place. It's not in the safest area. Plus, my parents don't know her. BUT she is a very trustworthy adult, and I have to give her her Christmas present before she leaves!

Will my parents let me go? They're fairly strict. Should they let me go? Should I have them drive me downtown? Should I go with a friend? Have my mom or dad go with me? Or is it just a bad idea?

1. I don't think it's a bad idea, but you should definitely talk about it
with your parents. In fact, make the suggestions you wrote about to them, and see what they have to say.

2. My girls used to be 16
And the first reaction is NO WAY are you taking a subway downtown to a dicey neighborhood.

But having had 16 year old girls, the odds of them accepting this without protest are slim to none. In fact, they usually searched out danger when given the opportunity. It's the teen age hormones I figure.

A nice compromise would be to accept a ride from the folks to your friends house. I'd also accept friend driving. But no solo downtown subway crappy neighborhood walking. Trust me , it's for your own good.
(ever hear that before?) :)

6. That's a good compromise. But if your parents can give you a ride, try asking a stranger.
If you're forced to take the subway, try to make friends by wishing everyone a "Happy Hannukah" along the way.

5. My daughter turns 16 in about three weeks.
And there is NO WAY would I let her do something like this by herself! Is there anyone that can go with you? Maybe a couple of girlfriends who'd be willing to tag along? Maybe someone you could bum a ride with?

I really hope you get to go, just want you to go as safely as possible. :hi:

7. I'm not a prude, but...
only a teen prostitute would ride the subway.

8. I actually take the subway everywhere.
I'm not allowed to drive until I'm 18, so I'd pretty much be stuck at home if it wasn't for public transit.
