Why do so many people dislike Dr. Phil?

I don't feel that strongly one way or the other. It's been ages since I've seen his show. But I notice a lot of people dislike him--how come?

1. I think it's because he tends to come off as a medical doctor...

psychiatry, you know, instead of what his expertise is in, phD in psychology. Both deal with mental functioning and behavior, but it seems that a psychologist would be a bit more experimental, rather than doing things off the cuff. I dunno.

He's also a really, really, really bad "therapist," who irresponsibly gives extremely sick people the impression they can just make some little changes to their behaviors and then everything will be fine (asshole).

5. He has the world's most annoying and obnoxious voice
His loud twangy swaggering booming redneck voice which is made 1000 times worse by the fact that he dispenses such medically astute gems as "Are you NUTS!" and "Get with the program, lady!" not to help the people who are seeking advice but to garner cheers from the studio crowd. Pop psychology at its worst.

No real doctor would attempt to help people without knowing much about the patient... but that's exactly what this phony does.

He's used to sell advertising. People like the smarmy schtick (God knows why), so he sells advertising. That's it.

into good behavior, not for their own good (he could counsel in private), but for his own good --ratings, money, success, his job is to make people look foolish and himself smart. the worse they look, the better he looks.

18. His Diet Advice/Book phase was hysterical.....
He came out in gym shorts giving weight loss and diet advice. Of course, no one ever did a Diet/Weight loss Book without making a ton of cash. Problem was he was a fat tub of goo. Just didn't have what it took to lose the 20 to 40 pounds it took to get his fat ass in shape.

17. I actually used to think his approach wasn't too bad
he seemed to be in favour of telling people the hard, cold truth about themselves instead of a bunch of sensitive psycho-babble. But my opinion of him changed radically when he used several of his shows as a platform for hawking-(to the point of downright bullying) his belief that it was morally wrong for any American to publicly protest the war in Iraq, and/or in anyway to fail to support in word, deed or action the fighting men and women of America's military.

I could have sworn dissent was the cornerstone of American constitutional rights.

21. Among the other issues mentioned...
I saw an episode where he had a dude pretend to be a homeless man and documented how poorly they were treated by the general public. His solution? Donating $2,000 to the united way. TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS is pocket change for that fuck. Nevermind the fact that he didn't bother to examine any of the socio-economical causes of poverty and homelessness. It was the kind of thing designed to make people feel good about what he did, even though he really did very little. I was watching it with my 16 year old brother and we both looked at each other thinking, "You have got to be shitting me."
