6:22 p.m.: Hammer attack fells Fontana High student

FONTANA - A Fontana High student who was attacked with a hammer by another student during woodshop class remained in serious condition Wednesday.
The attack apparently was over a girl.

The 17-year-old suspect snuck into the class Tuesday and hit the victim, also 17, once with the hammer, said Fontana Sgt. Jeff Decker, adding he did not know which end of the tool was used in the attack.

"To have a kid bash another kid in the back of the head in a class is an unusual event," Decker said. "This kid was bent on doing this. He had thought ahead to ask for what the penalty is going to be and came to the wrong conclusion."

The suspect had asked the woodshop teacher in a class earlier that day what the penalties were for murder, Decker said.
