1. cool pic!
Haven't tried it yet, but it's definitely on DH and my list. I live in the SF Bay area and I read recently that some company in the East Bay is now permitted to make absinthe. Of course it won't be like the real stuff due to restrictions :-(

been drinking since noon or so and had finished off all the beer and whiskey and this bottle of Absinthe my friend's brother sent her from Germany was the only booze left in the house. I drank half of it, played a few Irish Jigs on the harmonica and got violently ill. The whole setting it on fire, melting the sugar thing was fun, though.

7. I had some of the real deal in Prague several years ago.
I didn't go through all the sugar/water/candle rigmarole, and just whacked a shot straight down. It was the most extraordinary experience: like a perfect scan of my digestive system, outlined in pain. I think the thing was 70% alcohol, and it just stripped the lining out of my mouth, esophagus, stomach, intestines, bowel, underpants, trousers, floor, and (I would imagine) about 30' of earth under the building.

Strong stuff.

8. Hahahahahahahaha!
That's the effect _all_ alcohol, with the exception of white wine and beer, has on me. I'd just as soon drink paint thinner. :spray:

11. I know what you mean!
I've never been much of a one for the hard stuff, but even so, absinthe is just industrial solvent in a pretty bottle.

:hi:

14. The absinthe I had
Looked EXACTLY like Cool Mint Listerine.

Didn't help matters... because I expected it to taste like mouthwash and I had no where to spit it out!

9. I haven't but I would like to
but I don't want to waste a lot of money on fake crap so I'm biding my time until I can either go to Europe or convince someone else to bring me back some (My sister goes to Europe a couple times a year and she'll bring me back chocolate but refuses to bring me absinthe as she is a prude and if it's illegal here she thinks I shouldn't have it)

10. Was looking for a specific pic, but couldn't find it...
but this one is pretty cool! Didn't expect it to show anything except the link, then I hit preview and WOW!
:wow:

The pic I had in mind, but couldn't find, was of La Goulue, in profile, about to put a sugar cube into her glass of absinthe.

Stuff's been around for quite a while...why, you'll even find the Mary Sue of the Cro-Magnon set, Ayla, mixing up an herbal drink with a lot of the ingredients and qualities of absinthe.

(Think this occurs during The Plains of Passage)

13. Yes...
I tried a little bit in Prague.

BLEH! Glorified mouthwash! And whoo-boy that stuff is STRONG! I didn't last after one shot! (fortunately we did the shots in our hotel so our room wasn't far!)

but now that I have my passport (wrapped in my tailor made faraday's cage...tinfoil :P) first trip to Europe I plan to do so.

17. Just had some a couple weeks ago...
the newly minted Mrs. SteppingRazor and I both had a couple while on our honeymoon in Prague.

Tasted like hell, and though it has a high alcohol content, I didn't really notice any hallucinogenic effects, as the stuff is supposed to have. I just noticed the usual effects of drinking something that is just a few percentage points removed from rubbing alcohol.

18. I tried some homemade stuff in college
and it was the most bitter stuff I've ever had in my life. We were dumping sugar into the stuff and it didn't help much. It was a good all-body feeling though.

Maybe professionally-made stuff is better. I might be interested in trying it again.
