Mark Hamill plays the Joker better than Heath Ledger.
It's the voice. Seriously, if they'd chosen Hamill, everyone who ever watched the animated Batman series would buy a ticket to the next movie.

Not convinced? Here, have an episode.

3. Ditto. I'm only now old enough to get all the jokes.
Holy hell, Dini and Timm must have bribed the censors to let some episodes make the cut.

"Beware the Creeper" alone would give most parents a coronary.

(Wouldn't know of any torrents with the older episodes, would you?)

5. The original animated series was good.
The original was the Warner Bros. "Batman: The Animated Series", and I agree. It was surprisingly sophisticated for a cartoon.

But there was also "The New Batman Adventures", done by the same basic team as above, I believe. This one was very different in style. Bleh.

And then there was the teen Batman of "Batman Beyond". Interesting concept, bad execution.

'Toon Disney', a cable channel still shows The Animated Series every night.

I haven't been into comics or graphic novels since I was a kid, but something about Batman has kept my interest.

17. I guess it was a little too dark, and a little too good to last.
And, a little too true to the original vision of Bob Kane.

Face it, there's something seriously wrong with a man who dresses up like a bat and beats up criminals because he saw his parents gunned down.

6. He's only a voice!
I think the last thing I actually saw him on was playing Ms Swans father on MadTv.

This trailer rawks

7. Makeup does wonders.
Ledger sounds kind of burned-out. Sort of works for the Joker, but Hamill's laugh in full stereo would have chilled the spines of theater-goers across America.

And Hamill played the Joker on and off for ten years -- with style. Ledger is a rookie to the role. He seems like he'll do it relatively well, but...ehh...it just won't be as good.

Now, if Ledger had done an initial take and they'd dubbed Hamill's voice in (the technology must have improved since the days of Godzilla movies, right?), we'd have a perfect compromise.

8. Everything he's done since "Corvette Summer" has been downhill

I have no problem with his portrayal of the animated Joker, but it would have been a mistake IMO to link that series so directly with the current (and hands-down best) bigscreen run of Batman films.

Let the animated series be appreciated for its own strengths; let the films be appreciated for their own.

10. I agree - I think Hamill should have gotten the role.
Perhaps he never even wanted it, I don't know; but if he was interested, he should have gotten it.

12. Yeah yeah yeah
And Adam West should've had the role in Burton's awful film...

If Hamill were interested, he could have auditioned for the role.

Nothing against Dear Ol' Luke, but IMO he just wouldn't have fit.

YMMV

11. I'd buy a ticket regardless...
"Batman Begins" was so amazing, it was just what the doctor ordered for a tired old franchise.

More Scarecrow, please, BTW.

13. Agreed!
Cillian Murphy gave perhaps the most exceptionally (and appropriately) creepy performance that I've seen in years.

I just watched that film again the night before last. Very nearly perfect from start to finish.

If I had to change one thing, I'd give Flass a different hairstyle.

16. Hamill would have made a spectacular Joker, even visually.
I'm still up in the air on Ledger.

18. Except Hamill can't act
And I know his work on the cartoon gets raves, but I find the voice work, well, cartoony. It works on the cartoon, but I would have been "oh god" (rolls eyes) had hamill been cast in the movie.

The trailer looks good, really good and I'm pretty jazzed for the movie.
