in my spare time i read scanned images of old newspapers
in one paper from around 1911, they used the word "contumely" in a newspaper article.

i thought that was weird.

the paper seemed like it was written at higher than an 8th grade level.

1. I actually know what "contumely" means. Where do you get those old newspapers?
I'd like to read them myself.

4. Booger. Wish I had that access. Or maybe not; I'd spend whole days reading
the old papers instead of working.

I've got one too...the ability to go in and punch in a search criteria and have the thing go through about a million academic databases and spit out interesting articles by the hundreds...it's enough to make one weep...

:D

ON EDIT: I have an academic account through a university, and yet I fail the spelling test... :dunce:

5. Journalism was a bit different Back Then
Here's one newspaper's account of part of the top of the fourth inning in a 1909 game between the Pirates and the New York Giants:

With the third inning faded into the dim and forgotten past, the fourth spasm in the afternoon's matinee of Dementia Baseballitis hopped into the glare of the calcium glim. It was the Giants' turn to paddle the pellet, Murderous Michael Donlin taking his turn beside the glad gum. Mike biffed the ball on the proboscis and sent it gleefully gliding to the distant shrubbery... Bresnahan managed to get next to the seamy side of a floater and the Toledo kid sent the denizens of Coogan's Bluff into Seventh Heaven of Gleefulness by starting the pulsating pill on a line for the extreme backyard. But they reckoned without the mighty Wagner. The Carnegie Dutchman extended a monster paw, the near-two bagger was cleverly captured by a dainty dab of his lunch hook and before you could bat an eye he had whipped the globule over to Abby, who made an earnest effort to put Donlin down and out but missed by a fraction of an inch.

Any fans care to try to decipher what happened? :)
