Anyone know some good audiobooks?
I'm stuck at home with a badly broken ankle, and probably will be for the next week. I could use a few audiobook suggestions to keep me from going crazy.

Fiction or non-fiction. I'd just like something engaging and entertaining. Thanks :hi:

5. Share and share alike -- here are my favorites
These suggestions are specifically for audiobooks. They start with good source material and add excellent readers.

Harry Potter Series, UK Version. Stephen Fry reading. MUCH better than the American version, IMHO
His Dark Materials (Golden Compass, et al). Full voice cast. Very well done.
I Am Legend. Good horror novel and great, passionate reading by Robertson Dean
The God Delusion, by Richard Dawkins Read with delicious snarkiness by the author and his wife, Dr. Who actress Lalla Ward
Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson. Very well-done reading of one of my favorite books
The Diamond Age by Neal Stephenson. Ditto
The Conscience of a Liberal by Paul Krugman

Avoid:

Cell by Stephen King. Crappy rework of The Stand with unbelievably bad reading.
Anything by Michael Crichton, just cuz he's an asshole.

6. I enjoyed People's History of the United States with Howard Zinn and Matt Damon
Edited on Thu Dec-20-07 07:10 PM by irkthesmirk
it was very enlightening and well read. I also enjoyed listening to the audio book of To Kill a Mockingbird. It was read by a lady with a nice Southern accent and I'm a sucker for that!

7. If you like Stephen King...
I randomly picked out the audiobook of "Gerald's Game" and enjoyed it in a suitably creepy way.

8. Get all of
David Sedaris books on audio. It's the only way to "read" them. Got us through this stupid holiday season last year. Sorry about the ankle! :hi:

Check out the following website. The current season contains conversations with Johnathan Kozol and Naomi Klein and there are many archived seasons of conversations with brilliant writers and authors including Arundhati Roy.

10. Any William Gibson
Though Virtual Light was the one that I actually heard on tape. Interesting interaction between the reader, the writing and the subject matter.

12. I downloaded The Golden Compass simply because...
I had a coupon for it and was curious about the uproar over the movie. I'm so hooked and just downloaded the sequel.

I've also enjoyed Thomas Cahill's Hinges of History series. Are you a member of audible.com? I have found them to have decent prices.

18. Just did Golden Compass and Subtle Knife...
Also highly recommend Lois McMaster Bujold's "Curse of Chalion" and "Paladin of Souls." That's on top of her Miles Vorkosigan series (simply the best sci-fi period).

John Ridley's "Those Who Walk in Darkness" is very good. Dark, but good.

"Soon I will be Invisible" By Austin Grossman was pretty damn amusing too.

I listen to a lot of audiobooks.

19. The Dark Tower series by Stephen King
It's a totally captivating series. Sucks you in and doesn't let you go. If you saw "The Mist", the painting the guy was working on in the beginning was "Dark Tower" themed.

The first book is about 7 hours on tape, the second 12, the third 18. I haven't listened to the fourth yet, but I've read it a couple of times. I would guess about 22 hours.

The guy reading it, Frank Muller IIRC, does a damn good job. Really brings those characters alive in a way I didn't think could be done only with audio. He got injured in a motorcycle accident after doing the 4th book though. Brain damage, can't talk anymore. Stephen King wrote about it at the end of the 5th book in the series.
