Every year since 1995 I've gotten my mother a dated Christmas ornament for her tree. She loves them and that's the gift she looks forward to the most this time of year.
I don't have any kids, but I do have a niece who is now 5 years old. Shortly after she was born I observed my parents and her parents giving her toys for the holiday and for her birthday. So I decided that since the kid had every toy a little girl could have between my relatives and me that I would do something different. I opened a savings account for her and for every birthday and Christmas I deposit $50 into the account. She will get the proceeds when she graduates high school.
We celebrated on Saturday amidst all of the other plans to go to other relatives' and in-laws' Christmas parties. I very much enjoyed our get together, though. Tomorrow I'm going over to mom and dad's just to hang out with them, eat good food, and enjoy each other's company.
