1. The Chromatics covered that song rather nicely.
Of course, it'll never be Kate, but still, it's rather nicely done. Have you heard it?

15. Portland, Oregon
Their music is great. I'm loving it. I've been listening to them for a little while now. Just discovered them on myspace.

7. Kate's a great songwriter - but Placebo made that song theirs
That's no small feat, there. It's like Johnny Cash covering Hurt by Nine Inch Nails. Trent Reznor's also good at what he does, but for Cash to take such a powerful song and turn it into his own epitaph is beyond genius.

Fortunately for Kate, so many of her songs are so attuned to her own personality and quirks that it seems pointless to try to outdo her. Never heard Pat Benatar's version of Wuthering Heights, but I've heard people diss it left and right.

8. According to one Pittsburgh station
They routinely get calls asking who that old guy is whose song Trent covered.

Now that's making a song your own!

Sorry about your dog and all that, Trent, but Johnny knew "hurt" like you just plain don't!

10. "Old guy?" Damn...
That's seriously messed up. How can any American not even be somewhat familiar with the man?

11. I can go one worse, if you've the stomach for it
Following Cash's death, I happened to mention to several coworkers a quote in which Bono declared that Cash had had the all-around most masculine voice in music (and I take "voice" to mean both the sound of his voice and the manner of his narrative).

Anyway, one coworker responded (and, sadly, I kid you not) "What about Toby Keith? He's pretty masuline."

Yes, she's a Republican.

12. Ironically, Toby Keith identifies himself as a conservative Democrat
But yeah, Toby Keith has nothing on Johnny Cash.

Getting back to the OP, it's like saying that Britney Spears could sing Kate Bush under the table. Not gonna happen. Kate's a product of the same British progressive rock manifestation that gave us Genesis, Yes, Pink Floyd, and even King Crimson. She plays piano and synth. Wrote just about every song she's ever played. That little ex-Mouseketeer doesn't stand a chance.

13. Oh, yeah--sorry to deflect the thread
I hadn't heard Running up that Hill in several years and had sort of almost forgotten about it. Then I heard it one evening on my commute home and almost drove off the road.

Damn, what a song.

14. The title track to THE SENSUAL WORLD made me develop a crush on her, dammit
The rest of the album was okay - but that one song just floored me.

My favorite overall album from Kate, however, would have to be The Dreaming.

17. Oh-I love that one too. She looks so gorgeous in the video
but her dancing in the middle is a bit odd, but overall I love this one.

23. Oh, Lordy...
You just had to link to the video, didn't you? Now I'm all :loveya: over Kate again.

But you know what's weird about that song? For all the talk about Kate's vocal range, her vocals in The Sensual World demonstrate the least amount of range, but still evoke an emotional response. Of course, a little cooing and seductive whispering always helps - I can't complain. She simply knows how to sink the hook with her performance, and that makes all the difference. Compare Madonna's performance in Die Another Day, which has about the same amount of range but comes across as flat and uninteresting while Kate's performance in The Sensual World is anything but.
