My copy of firefox is locking up on startup
It goes to (not responding) and won't close. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling it with no change. It had worked okay the last few days (my computer is less than a week old, a sony vaio laptop with the hated- though this is the first trouble I've had, other than it's initial startup being very slow- Vista Home Extra Crispy or whatever of the million versions of Vista it is they install on these things.)

Any ideas for fixing the problem? (Don't tell me to get a Mac, I use one all day at work and they both suck and blow.)

1. My Firefox has been teh suckage for the last two weeks.
On startup, it won't find Google. It seems to drop the connection if left inactive for more than 2 minutes.

3. Well, at least it's not something I did, I guess.
Oh good, I thought it was just some sort of Vista suckage.

I'll go get a copy of Opera to use until it gets fixed.

9. I downloaded it after I got the computer set up.
It only came pre-loaded with Internet Exploder. (Well, and AOL, which I deleted once I got over the shock that they're still around.)

22. Not being snarky, but...
download Opera as an alternative browser when Firefox acts up. You might like it. http://www.opera.com/

When you deleted AOL, did you delets ALL of AOL? Bits and pieces of it hang out in strange places, and registry entries are always hanging around. Some of these cause wierdnesses.

This machine has XP Media Center Edition and it was hell getting all of AOL and McAffee out of this thing-- damn near had to call an exorcist. Uninstalling just gets rid of parts of them-- you still have to dig through folders to find the pieces, and then they COME BACK to haunt. I ended up using some sort of registry cleaner as the final exorcism. Then the thing started running fine.

23. Oh, I bet you the problem was that I deleted the free trial of Symantec.
Timing makes sense. Why oh why do they preload my computer with all that shit I don't want? :grr:

26. I'm running vista and having no problems
One suggestion would be to hunt down and destory all of sonys bloatware. I *hate* Sony, and I *hate* the stupid useless crap they pre-install on all of their computers.

Other than that, sorry, I dunno. You could try looking for a slightly earlier version of firefox and see if it works better for now.

About creating an alternate profile or something

But here is the thing

You said this is on a Sony Vaio. SOny Vaio has all these preset defaults.

That exist apart from the real defaults.

So when you made the decision to use Firefox rather than Internet Exploder, the regular set of defaults provbably figured that out when you added firefox and then deleted Internet Exploder.

But you need to go in and see if you can find the Vaio default dialogue boxes and then enter that system of defaults and see if you can affect things by letting that system know that you are now using Firefox. The older system I have gives you choices - and you can't even enter an alternate. So if you want to tell it to use firefox, it might come up with a dialogue box that reads "Discard Internet Exploder, run Netscape?" And there may not be a way to tell it "firefox"

I have Sony Vaio and it has been rather horrid. For instance, My default on Vaio understands that I want Windows Media player to be used as my player for YouTube videos, but that means I can no longer use my iTunes for the tunes that will only run with that.

Vaio doesn't seem to offer much flexibility. Other computers I use let you have multiple programs and they understand that you don't just want one media player all the time. (Mine is, though, a rather older version of Vaio, but I doubt they have changed that much.)

Then there is the whole issue of Vista, which could also be the problem. But I suspect Vaio.

29. I just got Firefox 2.0 loaded on here the other day (XP Home OS), and it's slickkkkk.
Sorry yours is being ultra sucky--is it 1.0 or 2.0? I dunno if that makes a difference.

30. Mine gave me trouble as soon as I put the metal ion "the 300" theme on it.
Fine since I deleted that one. Sucks cuz it is a really cool appearance/theme.

Also, I am using XP not Vista. Starting to hear grumbling about Vista.
