3. The book was wonderful.
I'll see the movie; I just hope it's as good as the book.

4. I Did - I Have Mixed Thoughts
Edited on Wed Jan-02-08 09:45 PM by Crisco
I :loveya: James McAvoy and am thrilled for the attention he's getting; he and Keira both turned in solid performances, and Saoirse Ronan - wow!

The movie was beau to look at, the Dunkirk long pan was magnificent.

I agree it's Oscar caliber because The English Patient and many other beautifully filmed, creative movies are Oscar caliber.

That said, I was left unsatisfied. I've never read the book and have no idea what differences there are, but I feel there may have been some dramatic shortcuts. Briony's solution was incredibly weak, IMO. What good was it to clear someone's name, finally, when there's no one it could do any good for, save perhaps Briony's conscience?

OTOH, that her haircut never changed between age 13 and 60-something or whatever, seems to be a short-hand way of saying she paid for her crime by being stuck in the past her whole life. That's more penance than atonement.

5. The Legions Of DU "English Patient" Haters.....
...have a new movie to despise. "Atonement" is yet another leisurely paced, intelligent, skillfully directed, finely acted, and veddy, veddy British flick. I thought it was great---but you "English Patient" caterwaulers should save your money.....

8. Thanks for the warning
I had never wished anybody to die already, until I saw "The English Patient".

Is she dead yet? No...

...is she dead yet? No...

...How about now? No...

6. I thought it was very good
Although on further reflection, my wife and I agreed that most of the plot would have proved irrelevant had a certain character had a more realistic reaction to the movie's central dilemma. (I don't want to say any more due to spoilers, but you probably know whom I mean.)

Knightley was gorgeous, as usual, and did a great job. I thought McAvoy was particularly good and will deserve the Best Actor nomination he might actually get.

7. It is a beautiful movie
I thought the young girl was wonderful. I'm also a huge McAvoy fan - he's one of my celebrity crushes - and he was fantastic.
