1. paypal?
That could work easily in certain circumstances. Very little fee, too.

4. My mom sends us money for Christmas every year.
She does a wire transfer from her credit union account. You'll need the routing info from the recipient's bank and an account number, and I think there's a fee you'll have to pay for a wire transfer. And it can take a few days; every Christmas, my mom is frustrated that the transfer isn't instantaneous because, after all, "everything is done by computers these days."

8. I was told that there are two kinds of wire transfers and that
one is faster than the other. Naturally, the faster one has higher fees.

9. I think perhaps foreign banks want to verify the availability of funds
before they make them available to the recipient.

7. Depends on the amount
If it's a small amount and they have an e-mail address, use PayPal.

If it's a large amount, you can wire it to their bank account.

Another possibility is an international postal money order, but there's a limit on how uch you can send.

I do a lot of work for clients in Japan and Europe, and they all use one or more of these methods to pay me.

10. western union should work well, too
go to their web site and see if it will work for you. You can either do the transaction over the phone with a credit card, or take cash or a card to one of their thousands of locations. Your own local supermarket may have WU.

11. Moneygram is a lot cheaper than Western Union, although...
... Western Union seems to give away more free swag to the receiver. When I went back to Thailand last year, my receiver had Western Union towels, cups, note pads, pens, etc. :)
