Anyone read Empire by Orson Scott Card? NO Spoilers!
I'm on Page 44. Holy shit. This book is not playing around. Set up, then BOOM BOOM BOOM...literally.
We saw a movie similar to this recently. What the heck was it?
Anyway, who else has read this, and how awesome is this book ALREADY?!
Please don't spoil anything for me. I want to read the entire thing and be surprised. Thanks.

1. won't spoil that book -
but consider -

OSC is a ultra right wing nutjob who believes in blowing the shit out of everyone who's "not like him".

Sorry.

I know it's harsh, but I used to be a huge OSC fan. Then I heard him speak and did a little research, he's NOT a nice man.

2. Are you implying that I shouldn't be able to enjoy someone's work...

...unless they are a liberal? I find that terribly closed minded and wrong.
He has already put forth an idea in the book that I completely Agree with. Many of the most liberal encountered are as closed minded or more so than the people they find closed minded. If you can't read and absorb the opinion opposite yours, how can you know what the real story is(Usually somewhere in the middle of the extremes)?

3. I think most people in general are closed-minded.
It's not easy to think outside the box. Some people's boxes are just different shapes and sizes than other's. :P

That being said... Card's written some interesting stuff (he even helped with some of the dialogue for the video game my icon came from :) ), but he IS a bit of a whack job.

4. Don't you have to be a little bit of a whack job to be a good artist?

but OSC is way beyond having "different ideas".

Some of the stuff he has written is decidedly - uh - creepy - for want of a better word. I think he's a very sick individual and I don't want to be tainted by some of his -uh - "ideas".

I don't want others who may be influenced by him to read him at all. I think he IS scary. Very scary. And not because of the right-wing bullcrap - which is bad enough. But there are - other ideas - of his that I find *very* disturbing.

Besides - I don't want him getting any of my $$.

5. I've also read that he's a pretty major league...
...plagiarist. I can't remember the details, but a few years back some other authors were getting pretty hot under the collar about his extensive "borrowings."

7. Interesting.
I could have sworn there was a post here a few months back about this book, and everyone was fawning over it.

8. I'm really not sure of the details...
...or how the situation was resolved, just that there was a lot of talk about it on the scifi forums. It's probably worth Googling if you're interested. Who knows, it could all be crap.

It's embarassing.

11. Is it another retelling of the BOM?
He's already snuck that one in on me twice, and since I could get the story for free (and delivered by cute guys with cycling butts for that matter) if I wanted, I'm kinda reluctant to buy any of his stuff. Especially since I haven't found anything he's written in fifteen years or so terribly impressive.
