Silly and small rant about dirty glasses in restaurants.
I was at a restaurant/bar tonight. Sat in the bar, order a glass of wine. The server was a very nice person.

Brought me the wine. The glass was crusty and had 3 different old lipstick rings on it.

I asked for a new glass. No problem. She takes the glass up to the bar.

Bartender sets it aside. Pulls another wine glass down. Eyeballs it, wipes the rim off with his bar rag and then pours my old glass of wine back into the new glass.

Is that standard operating procedure? Am I wrong to be grossed-out by that?

We paid the bill, left the tip and I left the wine, untouched.

3. Yeechhhh
I don't even want to think about it. Mainly because it used to always happen to me--became a running joke between me and DH. We try to patronize locally owned establishments whenever we can, and there's a local restaurant/bar with four or five locations in our area with pretty good food. It's more of a beer place, and Mr. MG and I drink wine; he usually drinks red and I usually drink white. White must be a "chick thing", because every time I got a glass of white, there was lipstick on it. I got into the habit of checking the rim the very second the waitress set down my glass and sure enough, more often than not, there was a lip imprint on it. I never watched to see whether the bartender looked for a clean glass or just wiped it off--never thought about it till you just mentioned it. So now I'm thinking, even though I survived...
:puke:

For the record, the place got a new dishwasher or something, because the problem stopped about a year ago. Thank the gods.

4. You weren't supposed to watch the procedure
Pay no attention to that dirty bar rag behind the curtain.

My first experience at a TGIFridays, about eight years ago, involved the table being set with dirty plates, glasses, silverware, and napkins. Dirty napkins?!? WTF?!? I haven't been back since then.

However, if you asked for a new glass, I suppose that they technically fulfilled your request. After all, you didn't ask for new wine...

You could justifiably have asked for the manager, but I think that your response was measured, polite, and appropriate, too.

6. And it's not like they were expensive linens, either
Garden variety paper napkins. Used, apparently.

Also, while there, I noticed that the waitresses had a small bussing/dump station with a garbage receptacle at the same height as and adjacent to the open ice bin for the soda fountain.

Tell me that there had never been an accidental "dump" into the wrong bin, and tell me that, in the event of such a dump, the ice bin was emptied and sanitized before being used again...

9. Ugh. Eating out anymore requires a person to be very brave...
I would have been seriously grossed out by that - wine into new glass - and probably would have said something. But maybe not. Either way, going to a restaurant is iffy anymore. I love to dine out, and just hope I don't get sick.

11. May be mistaken, but I think what he did was against health code
Something to do with contamination

I probably would have said something, and said it loudly...and made sure my drink was free...and then probably would have "spilled" it before leaving...

...but that's just me...
