A good place for a makeover.
Since leaving Texas nine years ago, I forgot about the art of applying makeup. The folks in New York City and Colorado don't require war paint for daily business, but I'd like to remember how to apply it for special occasions.

Does anyone know a good place that will show me good war paint techniques?

3. hmmm --
I don't really know the details of what your area has to offer. Might be a good place to start. They do make-overs for free where I am. There is not really any pressure to buy it all. Why not start there?

so, yeah. I guess I am. Or not.

4. I've had several great make-over's at the mall.
I usually go to Nordstrom for them; they've always done a very good job.

Look up makeup tutorials, or tutorials in general. If I can find some good ones I will post.

17. Youtube has tons of instructional vids, actually.
I've never looked up makeup ones, but it's not a far out idea at all. I'd check it out for certain.

8. Are you near a Red Door Spa?
I seem to remember Elizabeth Arden does make-up. Otherwise, I would suggest Nordstrom's or Sephora. I actually had better luck at Sephora finding a product that evens out my skin tone.

14. I went to a Sephora store once to pick up a Christmas gift certificate...
it was a little frightening to me - I've never seen a store with so many rows of makeup. It totally freaked me out! :P

19. Sephora
I know it's a little daunting to see every single brand of make-up on the market all in one place. If I hadn't gone in, I would never have discovered the Martian green face paint that I use to cover up my Rosacea. I walked up to a sales person around my age and asked for advice. We tried about a dozen products to get the ones that worked best for me. Now granted I did this in Buffalo, NY. I haven't checked the NYC branches to see if they might be as helpful.

10. Funny you should ask!
I made an appointment for 1:00 p.m. tomorrow for a free "makeover" at Bare Escentuals at the Denver Pavilions. I don't wear foundation at all, just a little blush and some eye crap. I guess this stuff they'll put on my face is powdered minerals -- it's supposed to look like you're not wearing any makeup at all. I'm hoping it'll make me look like I've had an eyelid tuck!!

22. You'll either love it or hate it.
That seems to be the reaction of most people I know. Either it is wonderful, or breaks them out. If you like the look but not the expense, try www.everydayminerals.com

And btw...if you are interested, I have recently been getting into lots of make it yourself face care and etc. I have learned how to make my own stable vitamin C serum/gel, and various things to help my face in it's journey. The major things most women on the boards I am frequenting seem to use are 1)a retinoid of some sort (either prescription on retin-a, or an otc lower-dose variation-my fave) and 2)a vitamin c serum. These are the main things that are really, actually effective across the board for most people.

Anyway, if you are interested, lots of info at this site:
www.smartskincare.com
You do have to pay for the info-packs this place offers, or you can submit a review of a doctor/spa/medication; but it's worth it. I have made my own Vit.C gel for less than $10. For facial sag, check out the sections on DMAE and (I believe) copper peptides.

Other great info and reviews: www.makeupalley.com
This place is referenced by others all over the web, great community and clearinghouse of info. Just grab the board you are interested in and do a search. The only confusing thing may be the abbreviations, but feel free to ask.

One more: http://www.essentialdayspa.com/forum/
A bit confusing, but some great info there also.

I'm really enjoying learning that I don't need to pay a fortune for some of the same stuff that is on the shelves...

21. Go to both the Mac store in Cherry Creek
and the Bobbi Brown counter at Neiman Marcus. The makeup artists at Mac will actually do your makeup for you for special occasions.

Do women all wear tons of makeup there?

I only spent about 2 or 3 days in Austin TX, so I don't know.

24. I attended college in Austin... it's not like the rest of the state. It's more laid-back.
But I grew up in North Texas and started working there post-college... it's make-up to the max. Women will wear full make-up to go grocery shopping.

Since Bobbi Brown is the beauty expert for this site, the tips should be great.

The women at work found out I can do makeup...so now I've been doing one or two makeovers a week. It's fun.

If you ever get down to The Nam, give me a yell.

31. Right now, mostly daytime looks
I've been working on a "convertible face" for a while. That's real popular.

To achieve the convertible face, you want to start with a soft, pretty eye and a reasonably neutral lip--a plum, mauve, muted pink, something like that. That's your day look. To convert it to an early-evening look, just change your lipstick to either a brighter red or a wine (depending on your skintone) and you're ready for dinner and the movies.

You'll want to change to a more dramatic look for an actual night on the town, but if you're going straight from work to the restaurant, the convertible face is just the thing.

I worked up a more dramatic look for one of my co-workers who wears quite a bit of color to work. Among other things, I lined her eyes from the inner corners to the center of her pupils in sage green and from there to the outer corners in deep brown. I then used red, bronze and gold shadows. That looked REALLY good. (Don't try that if you're not really confident about yourself.)

27. The MAC counter, Sephora and bare minerals
would be my recommendations.

The people at the MAC counter actually get out the color wheel when discussing your options with you. And they are good at finding what compliments your skin tone. For instance, I have blue eyes, and she actually got out ORANGE eye shadow for me, a color I had never even considered. But she's right Orange and Blue are complementary on the color wheel. So I bought them and I now where orange eye shadow. I may go back and let her show me which greens she thinks I could wear, which she also mentioned as a good option for me.

Sephora brings out my girlie girl side. Hee. I love to go in there and play! You can ask to test out just about anything in the store, and there are all sorts of sample sizes to be had.

Bare Escentuals make up is wonderful. I will always buy it. It's non greasy, mineral makeup that won't irriate your skin and the colors are very natural looking, you look like you're not wearing make up at all (unless you want to really do up your eyes or lips for example.)

Just play! Makeup is supposed to be fun. B-)

29. I went to Sephora today and purchased a Bare Minerals starter kit.
I'm wearing it now. It feels rather good, although I do think I can still feel it (I did apply it more heavily, though.)

When I get a bit more spending cash, I'll go for the eye shtuff.

30. That's what I did
I went to Sephora and got a starter kit.

Man, the Sephora lady put so much on me, I could have gone on TV and had a soap opera close ups! I like because it evens out my skin tone. My skin is very thin and the make up makes me look more healthy.
