Anybody here NOT like Subaru's?
My van's transmission self-destructed on Thursday and a good friend of mine has loaned me his beater truck and is car shopping for me. He's a mechanic and a big Subaru fan and he's making mileage towards getting me convinced.

He's got a line on a 2002 Outback with low mileage that I could probably afford.

1. Subaru-Highly reccomended
We have two, a Forester and an Outback, both 01. We had a computer chip go out, but other than that no troubles. Perhaps a little less refined than Toyotas or Hondas, but seem to go forever. I have a friend that has owned nothing else in nearly 25 years and he drives a good 35 to 40k a year. Downside: MPG okay, but not great. I finesse my driving (no fast starts, coast to stops etc.) and get about 25 in mixed driving, 30 highway.

2. I love Toyota's personally but I have never heard anything bad about
Subaru's. Having a way to get around is really important. Good luck with whatever you get. :7

3. We have driven a subie for 5 years now-
things to watch out for and ask your friend about:

Head gaskets-- have they been replaced? If they haven't, then I would check consumer reports and see about that particular year; I know the 2001's were notorious--not sure about 2002. Google this--it's wild to read how many people this happened to.

Timing belt-- make sure it's been done, and that the water pump, and front cam seals were taken care of at the same time. Also, check to see if the seal around the oil pump was replaced at that time.

Regular oil seals--rear main, pan gasket, and that one on top that I can't think of because I haven't had enough coffee yet.

Subarus are scary when they develop the tiniest oil leak---will start smoking from the engine compartment, smells like hell, but when you check the oil, you can't tell a thing from the dipstick--because it was just a couple of drops--not funny!

Engine noise---those boxers aren't quiet! Road noise on the highway is something you have to get used to, unfortunately. But, in a storm with standing water on the road, or any snow--you will do great!

4. Hubby and I have owned nothing but Subarus since 1979
Currently have 2 Foresters. Very reliable, outstanding in snowy travel. Easily get 150K miles out of them. Low maintenance cost and decent gas mileage.

5. I loved mine.
It unfortunately was a company car and I had to give it back. I had money down on a new one and was about to pull the trigger when I found a used Volvo AWD Wagon and bought it. Now I wish I didn't. I should of bought the Subby. I had a 2001 Legacy Sport Wagon.
