The Great Explosion of 2008
Smoothie explosion. Hit the ceiling and got into the blender motor vents. Now THAT'S talent!

4. OK...
Whole milk, vanilla ice cream (premium), Cool Whip, frozen strawberries, ice (maybe a cup of crushed ice), vanilla extract and almond extract.

Play around with the amounts until it suits you.

Delicious!!

That's a whole afternoon of thorough cleaning. :(

8. Here's the thing Thom...
Not only did it explode, but the bottom part including the blade fell out of the bottom and dumped on the counter when I lifted the container from the base. So I only got about a coffee cup full of delicious smoothie.

It's all cleaned up, except for the blender base, which I will do later with a Q-Tip or something.

:hi:

11. Doh!
I bet you'll remember to check to make sure all the parts are properly screwed together before you use that blender again. :)

My worst kitchen accident was the time I used a Pyrex bowl on the stovetop for some stupid reason, and it exploded! Bits of glass and soup went absolutely Everywhere! I had to baricade the cats out of the kitchen so I could clean it up. :P

13. Wow!!! Check this one out...
Yikes...I can imagine that Pyrex glass exploding! That's nasty when shards of glass fly everywhere.

Actually, my worst kitchen disaster was when I was a kid and my mom was out. My friend and I used to make smoke bombs by cooking a mixture of Potassium Nitrate (Salt Peter) and sugar. I seem to remember that we got the recipe from Abbie Hoffman's "Steal This book".

Anyway...this was some nasty stuff and really something a kid should not be fooling with. The finished product used to burn so hot that it would burn through tin foil in a matter of seconds.

Well, the damn thing literally exploded in my kitchen when I was cooking it and my old 13 room house filled up solid with smoke.

To this day i can't believe the fire department didn't show up.

I placed a distress call to my friend, and 5 minutes later I saw him sprinting up the street carrying two huge box fans!

15. Man, you are lucky to still be alive!
My mom would have smelled even the smallest traces of smoke and that would have been the end.

I'm glad that your mom was more forgiving than mine. :)

17. She was out for a few hours...
and there still was a smell of smoke in the house after she returned, but I somehow talked my way out of it.

I remember it was a different kind of smell...it was not like the remnants of a house fire, it was kind of a cleaner smell that dissapated relatively quickly.

I still can picture it...I was cooking it in a big stainless steel tub, my face was over it while I was stirring it. It started looking a little "funny", and it was bubbling too much, so I killed the gas, but it kept cooking and exploded like a volcano. Jesus...:scared:

12. Don't sell yourself short. There's a lot of 2008 left.
Tempting fate by calling this event "THE Great Explosion" is asking for it.

16. I do hope it's the biggest catastrophe you have all year.
I've had Pyrex cookware explode.

Oh, and a co-worker had a "smoothie" incident that resulted in surgery.

She stored her smoothie-maker pieces on a high shelf. As she reached for the blade pieces, it fell and landed on the top of her bare foot, severing a tendon (ligament?). She tried to hobble to the hospital but ended up calling her BF for help. She had 2 surgeries and a cast for several weeks.

Making smoothies is a dangerous business.

Be careful out there.

19. OMG!!
I am so sorry for your co-worker!

Funny you mention this...I was examining the blades to make sure they were clean today before I started and I lightly touched one. They are indeed brutally sharp and I could see how an accident like that could happen.

18. If that happened to me today I'd prob' leave it and clean it another time
:P

A few years ago I held a large ceramic roasting dish with one hand. I decided it was a great idea to hold that dish right where there was a hairline crack. Well a turkey was in it. It broke in my hand and sliced my left pinkie to the point I had to get it stitched up.

My other accidents usually have occurred with knives when I was younger; the worst was when I sliced my ring finger with a dull serrated knife when peeling an orange at my aunt's house. :( It bled like hell and while it healed, the skin around the cut was sickeningly white and pale.

20. Wow...
These stories about breaking dishes actually scare me.

I guess I am not always fully cognizant how bad accidents can happen with the simplest of household devices.

Glad you made it through all that OK! :)
